Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I just receive a Digest or Index to cut down on my email?

lists FAQ
The IEEE supports a huge number of lists. Their staff decided the best way to ensure the ListServ server did not get swamped was to put the archives elsewhere. Instead of ListServ archives – called "Notebooks" – we send a copy of each email to MHonArc, which maintains our archives on another server. Unfortunately, ListServ's Digest and Index options depend on the Notebook feature; they are unavailable on lists that don't have it.

SpamCop FAQ
First, send an email directly to your spamcop.net email address. Then, login to webmail or use your regular email program to see if it shows up. If it does, that shows that we're receiving email and your account is currently capable of receiving email. If we POP your mail for you, login to webmail and go to your POP settings. Are your POP accounts listed as having zero errors? If not, there should be a clue here as to why we are unable to POP your mail any more.

Some ISPs (like MSN, earthlink, juno, prodigy, etc) block ALL smtp traffic except smtp traffic destined to their own servers. This is to prevent their ISP customers from sending out spam. So to solve the problem, you need to make the following changes in your Outlook email client: instead of using the mail.domainname.com server name that we assigned to you for sending email via your domain, you will need to use your ISPs smtp server instead.

Why can't I receive or use the email attachments that people send to me?

Unofficial AOL Email FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
AOL does not handle multiple attachments per message in a very useful manner. Multiple attachments are combined using MIME encoding. This is most easily avoided by asking your correspondent to include only one attachment per message (using BASE64 encoding) and turn off any additional HTML formatting. Multiple attachments can be safely compressed together, and you can decompress them on your end (in many cases the AOL software will do this automatically).

Why can't we have separate lists for different projects to cut down on my email?

We've tried that, a couple of times. There's a risk some participants could miss important information because they aren't on the right list. To compensate, many announcements get sent to all the lists; then those who subscribe to every list, so they don't miss anything, get multiple copies. Overall, there's usually an increase in email instead of a reduction. We've been more successful with a single list for all 802.1 email. If you aren't interested in an item, you can throw it away.
