The only kind of breathing device for spray primer like zinc chromate is a 3M 6000 series organic filtered respirator. If you buy a cheap respirator make sure it has the canisters installed for fumes and not the white filters for dust. Dust masks do not work for paint of any kind. The WSR series is a direct to metal (DTM) coating and will provide excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance to bare metal and will exhibit no flash rusting. We recommend light sanding of the surface with fine water sand paper or fine steel wool. Then, wash your model with water and soap, and dry it with air from your compressor. Now you can apply primer in light coats. Primer in the jar is already prepared and thinned to get the best result.

Primer doesn't need to cover completely to make its job. Two or three light coats can be enough, unless the plastic of our model is dark and you're going to apply a light color over it, as white or yellow. Then we recommend aplying some more coats to get a lighter primer coat under the color coats.

For most applications, there is no primer needed. Nansulate can be applied directly to the clean, dry surface. The surface should be free of dirt, grease, dust, flaking rust, etc.. If the surface has rusted areas, then the rust should be removed with wire brushing, and the area treated with a rust neutralizing product before application of Nansulate. Nansulate should not be diluted, so no thinner is needed. A primer may be desired for an uneven surface, or a porous surface.

I prefer to use Testor's line of primers. They have two colors: grey and white. You want a primer that has good "tooth" or gripping power as this is what will allow the paint to stick to the plastic or resin. Try to stay away from any sandable primer which is what you will more than likely come across at most department stores. These primers are made to be sanded off so their tooth is not that great.
