For your host mother and host father, "Otoosan" (father) and "Okaasan" (mother) are perfectly acceptable. However, if you are close to them in age, or feel otherwise uncomfortable calling them father and mother, using their family name is fine too, for example "Nishihara-san". If they then ask you to call them by their given names, you can start doing so, but it is best to wait to be asked first.

Yes. We will try to accommodate any requests you have regarding your host family. However, please bear in mind that while we will do our best, it may not be possible to find a family exactly as you requested.

In most cases, yes. However, a few of our host families can accept more than one student, each of course in their own private room. We try to only place students of different native language in the same host family.

You learn about your host family during orientation before you are placed. At that time the housing coordinator can answer your questions and share other students' feedback about the placement.

Food products from your home country or area are always appreciated, especially semi-sweet items. Japanese people often have less of a taste for very sweet foods than people in other countries, so these should be avoided. Alcohol is also a gamble, as some people do not drink. It can be a good idea to contact your host family before you arrive, and check with them, if you plan to bring something alcoholic.

Our school is located in the very center of a major city, which while being convenient for most things, means that there are not many families living close by with a spare room. So, there are few to no host families within walking distance of the school itself. However, Japan has a great public transport system, of buses, subways, and trains, so it is quite easy to get from most accommodation to the school.

No, your family will not be required to host an exchange student in return. WEP Australia, however, would be grateful if your family did consider offering another student the same hospitality and care that you have received. Hosting offers enormous benefits to all concerned.

If for some reason you are unhappy with your family please talk to your local coordinator at your site. Please make sure to always discuss problems with your family, and it may be an issue of miscommunication. If things cannot be resolved on your own or with the help of the coordinator, you may switch families within the program.

Yes/no. As the traditional Chinese apartments are not very spacious (normally only two bedrooms in most areas) and will be very difficult to accommodate an extra person. However, we will try our best to arrange a short term, home-stay (about one week) upon your initial application.

Yes! We are able to place you with a host family either in the city of Santa Cruz or a nearby community. All of our families are interviewed by the host family coordinator. You can choose a plan that includes meals, or one that does not. With each option, you pay your host family directly.

The club's pavilion area is ideal for hosting family reunions for 4 or 40. Picnic tables are plentiful, the clubhouse is nearby, there's a play area with swings and a basketball hoop for the kids, and ample parking. Advance notice to other club members requesting exclusive use of the area for the event is an appreciated courtesy.

DMD Host Families are volunteers who are usually found through presentations to local church and civic groups. Prior Host Families also refer new families to us.

After a family expresses interest, an ISE Representative meets the family, checks the references and helps the family select the student. If the school allows foreign students to attend, an ISE representative will secure school permission and help enroll the student.

The Homestay Coordinator will do the best to match you with a suitable Canadian family. However, sometimes personality conflicts cannot be avoided. Students must realize they are dealing with a new culture in a new country. They are asked to make every effort to adjust to Canadian culture, including food and customs, but are encouraged to speak to the Homestay Coordinator if problems arise.

After we receive your homestay application form and payment for homestay we will send you information recommending a family which we feel will be a good match for you.

You should be interested in young people from different cultures, be rather an idealist, have a big heart, a good sense of humor and a lot of patience; you ought to be flexible and uncomplicated, be eager to learn, and last but not least should have a spare bed and a freely open home.

You may make local telephone calls from your family. All long distance calls must be made using a calling card or with the family's permission.

It is important to understand that a "homestay family" does not always consist of 2 parents with children. A couple or a widow(er) whose children have grown up and left home often make excellent "homestay families".

Yes, many families in the Berea area participate in this program, providing international students a "family away from home" and an opportunity to get to know the American lifestyle better. It is, however, not a home-stay program and not a source of financial aid. All international students are encouraged, but not required, to participate.
