What is an "age-adjusted" incidence rate?
Public Data Websiteage-adjusted rate is different from a crude rate in that the incidence rate is modified to take into account how the age distribution of the population of interest varies from a conventionally-used "standard population". It is important that the same standard population be used so that age-adjusted rates can be compared to each other. The U.S. 1970 population has been used as a standard for many years, and the U.S. 2000 population will soon be used as the standard.
Related QuestionsWhat is an "age-specific" incidence rate?
Public Data Websiteage-specific incidence rate is the number of newly diagnosed cases of a disease in a specific age group in a particular population over a specified time period per "x" number of people in that age group. Typically, five-year age groups (0-4, 5-9, 10-14, etc.) are used. The time period is usually one year and the "x" number of people in the specific age group is usually 100,000.
Related QuestionsWhat is an "incidence rate"?
Public Data WebsiteThe term "incidence" refers to the number of newly diagnosed cases of a disease occurring in a specific population during a specific time period. The incidence rate is the number of newly diagnosed cases in a specific population during a specific time period per "x" number of people; usually the time period is one year and "x" number of people is 100,000. Such an incidence rate is "crude", is not age adjusted (see #11 below) and therefore cannot be used to compare different populations.

Related QuestionsHow are age adjusted rates used?
CLEI | FAQAge adjusted rates are standardized so that the relationship between age and particular causes of death has been statistically eliminated. These rates allow communities with different age distributions to compare causes of death. Age “adjusted rates should be viewed as relative indexes rather than actual measures of occurrence. 2
Related QuestionsWhat exactly are age-adjusted rates?
Frequently Asked QuestionsThe rates of almost all causes of disease, injury, and death vary by age. Age adjustment is a technique for "removing" the effects of age from crude rates so as to allow meaningful comparisons across populations with different underlying age structures.

Related QuestionsHow is the feed rate adjusted?
Circle Feeder Frequently Asked QuestionsThere are two ways to adjust the discharge rate. The first is by changing the height of the flow-adjusting ring. This corresponds to the distance between the bottom edge of the cylinder and the flat surface in the example above. This is considered a "rough" adjustment and generally results in a 3:1 turndown. The other way to change the capacity is by changing the shaft rotational speed. By using a variable frequency drive an additional 5 to 10:1 ratio can be obtain.

Related QuestionsHow is the Band adjusted?
LapBand FAQThe Band is tightened by accessing the port with a needle. This is most commonly done in the office. Some surgeons do it at the hospital under x-ray guidance, but this is generally not necessary, and makes the procedure much more expensive. For patients with very thick abdominal walls, it may be more difficult to find the port. In our office we have an ultrasound machine which makes it possible to access most ports without need for x-ray.
