Still, most traditionalists favor the look and performance of natural silencers whether they are wool or fur. Wool string silencers like the "Woolie Whispers" (sheep wool), "Quiet Wool" (llama wool) and "Musk Ox" (musk ox under-wool called "Qiviut") string silencers are fantastic at dampening string vibration and they remain remarkably dry in wet conditions.

With over 450 different types of string on the market, the average tennis player doesn't know where or how to begin the search for the best tennis racket string. Choosing the wrong string type and inappropriate tension can make a $250 racket feel like a wooden club even to the most skilled of players. Here is a breakdown of the most common types of strings available: Natural Gut: The undisputed champion of tennis strings. Gives both power and feel.

Kevlar (the stuff bullet-proof vests are made of) is the most durable string material, often lasting many times longer than the average nylon or synthetic gut.

Most strings come with a resiliency rating. The higher the resiliency, the more power the strings should offer. Generally, thinner strings are more resilient, as are gut and synthetic gut materials.

Thinner strings are generally believed to bite into the ball better and produce more spin. A stiffer string material such as kevlar should also bite the ball more. For spin, the ideal string might be a very thin kevlar, but most players like thinner strings for their lack of stiffness, so they avoid kevlar.

The rule of thumb is to re-string your racquet as many times a year as you play in a week. Therefore, if you play three times a week, you should re-string your racquet every four months.
