How do I change my differential fluid in the rear end of my car?

_4
This was taken from the LS1 FAQ which is on www.ls1.com and was original submitted by Mitch Warren. I have made my own slight modifications to the instructions based on what I feel is the best way to do this. Let me start by saying you will get lubricant on the floor. It's unavoidable. If you have been driving your car for any length of time, the lube will be hot, so please be careful and have the oil soak and shop towels handy.

Is it important to change the fluid in my car's Differential?

Yes. Changing the fluid in your differential will extend its life by removing dirt and moisture and by maintaining lubrication and minimizing high speed foaming. When the fluid gets dirty, it can no longer lubricate as it was designed.

How often do I change the fluid?

Frequently Asked Questions :: ChemFree's SmartWasher :: Worl...
Under normal use, and proper maintenance, you should never have to change the solution. That is one of the biggest advantages of the SmartWasher. Ozzy cleans the solution of contaminants, leaving you clean solution to work with. Hydrocarbon materials are bioremediated in the SmartWasher so your "used" solution does not need to be hauled away as hazardous waste.

Do I really need to change my differential fluid at the first 7,500 miles?

_4
Yes. Although some people not familiar with the rear ends in this car will tell you different, the rear ends have a lot of meshing to do when they're new and they will develop a lot of metal shavings in the fluid which much be released. Some people actually change their fluid before 7,500 miles. Once you've changed the fluid the first time, you don't need to keep doing it every 7,500 miles after that. Follow the service schedule in my user manual for your car.

Why is my rear differential making the grinding noise?

Impala SS Frequently Asked Questions List
There are several possible problems with the rear axle. One is that the improper gasket has been used, which does not allow enough lubricating oil to the side outer (wheel) bearings. The rear axle gasket must be changed immediately to the proper Fel-Pro RDS 55028-1 which has the correct lubricating holes allowing more oil to flow into the axle tubes. The second problem is that the axle manufacturer (American Axle), seems to be somewhat sloppy with respect to shim selection.

Why does my dog scoot his rear end along the ground?

drjeff.com - FAQ - Century Veterinary Group
This is not an uncommon problem. It probably means that your dog has full or infected anal glands. These glands help dogs to mark their territory through scent. They usually empty themselves every time a dog defecates. They can become clogged, however, and unable to empty, and sometimes infection can develop. When this happens, your dog feels a constant, itchy pressure. It can be very uncomfortable. To get your dog relief, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

Is it better to change my engine oil and transmission fluid at the beginning or end of the season?

Indmar Marine Engines
It is better to change the oil and transmission fluid at the end of the season, prior to storage. Lubricants naturally accumulate moisture, combustion by-products, and other contaminants during use. It can be detrimental to store an engine or drive with large amounts of these contaminants present.

Is there some sort of problem with the rear axle bearings and/or the differential cover gasket?

Impala SS Frequently Asked Questions List
If you look at the rear differential cover, you will notice two small indentations on either side directly in line with the axle tubes. These indentations are to direct the flow of oil through two holes in the differential case which then flows down the axle tubes to lubricate the axles and the outer axle bearings. The differential cover gasket is also supposed to have two holes in it, which line up with the holes in the case as well as the indentations to allow oil to flow down the axle tubes.

Q41: My car has a fold-down armrest in the rear seat. Can I install my carseat in front of it?

Child Carseat Safety FAQ
Generally, yes. Though there appears to be no evidence that this is unsafe, at least one company, Evenflo, used to recommend that you do NOT install many of their carseat models in front of a fold-down armrest. Ford has a similar recommendation for some of its vehicles. Please consult the owner's manual of your vehicle and carseat before making this decision.

Will installing a higher stall speed converter require me to change my rear end gear ratio?

BMRacing
Not normally. The choice is up to you. If you're satisfied with the rear gear ration prior to your new converter you will be after the installation as well. If you want better acceleration you might want to change ratios.

What rear-end ratios are available in the Impala / Caprice?

Impala SS Frequently Asked Questions List
All '94's and some early '95s came with the second gear start function built in. This has been verified. Sometime early in the '95 production run, a new PCM calibration was issued that either disabled the 2nd gear start feature on accident or on purpose. Some have heard that it was because too many people where blowing transmissions by starting in 2nd with a trailer attached. Chevrolet is aware of this problem and has opened a file folder on it (number 960149175).

what fluid should i use in my tt 6-speed? how about in the differential?

we recommend only the stock v160 oil for the 6-speed. it works great. pricey, but not compared to the thousands for a new transmission. do not use redline synthetic d4 atf for the transmission. click here to read why. other brands you may use at your own risk. the redline synthetic 75w90 (not the 75w90ns) in the differential works well.

The rear differential is slightly offset, does that matter?

Exaxt 4WD
Under most all situations are rear offset differential is not a concern. The only concern is when the offset increases U-joint angles to an unacceptable degree. Even stock full-size Jeep Wagoneers came with a centered rear transfer case output and an offset rear differential. Why does this not matter? A U-joint doesn't know or care which way is up! All it is concerned about is the angle at which it is running. Whether that angle is true to the ground or not is of no consequence.

Can I put rear disk brakes on my car?

st Gen CRX FAQ's - Hondaswap
Yes, but you will need to graft the rear axle from an Integra onto your car to make it happen. Another alternative is to replace the iron rear drums with aluminum drums from the HF model. This saves weight and works just as well as the Integra rear disks. You will have to change the rear brake backing plate to a HF plate to make the aluminum drums fit, but that is a relatively easy job.

What is Differential GPS?

Draft rec.boats.cruising FAQ
When the US defence department developed the GPS satellite system, it was meant for military applications - to help pinpoint the exact position of a soldier in the field, for example. That system is extremely accurate, within something like 50 feet. The DoD didn't want to give that capability to the enemy, so they scrambled that signal. The signal that's available to the public has been deliberately tweaked to provide a position within about 200 feet.

How do we change the fluid and filter?

Petermark Automotive: Frequently Asked Questions
Depending on the vehicle make and model, some transmissions have external filters exactly the same as an engine and some have a filter inside the gearbox which requires the pan to be removed and then replaced. We change the transmission oil using a fluid exchange machine which pushes the old oil out and adds the new fluid at the same time.

Why change the brake fluid?

Petermark Automotive: Frequently Asked Questions
Brake fluid is a hydroscopic fluid, meaning that it attracts moisture. Moisture is created from the heating/cooling effects of normal brake use, also humidity from the atmosphere. This moisture causes rusting and pitting of internal parts, which leads to unnecessary replacement costs. Under severe braking excess, moisture can cause the fluid to boil, leading to brake failure.
Related Questions

When is it necessary to change the brake fluid?

Petermark Automotive: Frequently Asked Questions
We test the moisture content using a hydrometer. Once the fluid has an excess of 3% moisture, we will recommend replacing it. This is checked annually by us and normally requires changing every 2 years.

How long does the fluid last and do I have to change it?

TES Drying System - Desert-Dry in Record Time!
The fluid should be filtered after the first 200 hours of use and should be changed out every 2,000 hours. This can take place at the distributor location and be completed in about 30 minutes. Tes does not "use up" the tes fluid while in operation. It is possible however, to lose approximately one teaspoon of fluid when the quick connects are disconnected. There is a sight tube on the front of the tes machine.

I have fluid collecting in the rubber bellows at either end of my steering rack, is this normal?

Rislone Products FAQ
No, the rubber bellows are mainly designed to keep dirt out of the steering rack and only keep in a small amount of thick grease which lubricates the inner tie rod ends. Any signs of fluid in or leaking from the bellows means a seal inside the rack is leaking. Rislone Power Steering Stabilizer with Stop Leak is the perfect product to use for this type of leak.
