These studies fill a critical niche within the education, research and public service functions of an academic health center. The educational objective is based upon the growing importance of understanding the impact of changes in the health care delivery system on the role and functions of all health care professionals. Topics such as health care policy, health economics and evidence-based medicine have become essential ingredients of the education of future professionals.

One "problem" with a career in biology is that there are so many possibilities that preparing for any one of them is a continuously evolving project. While the IB Honors faculty and academic advisors may be helpful in identifying a good path to start down, the fundamental truth of the matter is that any path is made easier by the kinds of good preparation that the IB Honors program affords. Apparently so. A number of current IB Honors students volunteer in hospitals, or serve as EMTs.

The first (and most preferred) is to call and make an appointment in advance. If you cannot get to your appointment for some reason, it is your responsibility to call and cancel. The second way is, if you have an acute illness that needs immediate attention "same day appointments" are available. You must call at 8 a.m. and request an appointment for the same day. Same day appointments are limited and only for people who are acutely ill.

Health services research is needed to evaluate, using scientific methods and evidence, what parts of the health care system truly do enhance health. Many procedures and treatments may be expected to improve health but in reality may not. This information is needed to avoid treatments that are potentially dangerous but that are not beneficial and to better allocate the limited resources available for health care services.

No. Every student has an LMU student account. The Student Health Center will bill this student account for services rendered, such as medicines, lab work and x-rays. At the end of the month, you will be billed by the Controller's office. The billing statement will state "Student Health Center charges," with the amount owed. No other information is divulged.

Most primary care-type visits to see a clinician are totally free. However, if lab testing is performed or medication is dispensed, there are charges associated with those services. Charges are relatively small for lab work that is done in the Health Center and for medications that are stocked. All charges are payable by cash, check, or can be added to your Bursar tuition billed. Clinicians at times, may have to utilize outside laboratory and/or pharmacy services.

The University Health Center is a full service clinic which offers medical services from board certified physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses. In addition we offer sports medicine and physical therapy services, dental services, medical laboratory services, health promotion information, x-ray services, pharmacy services, immunizations, travel medicine services and much more.

We expect that health professionals, who participate in such a project over a twelve-month period, will demonstrate greater competence in communication and in understanding and addressing psychosocial issues compared to those participants who do not take part in this seminar. We anticipate that thirty pediatricians and nurse practitioners or more will wish to take part in this project.

Health services and policy research has become an essential discipline in recent years.

Academic-based health services and policy research programs are in unique positions to meet these needs. They provide a knowledge of what is 'known', which can be useful in challenging the self-interested positions of stakeholders and, because they are at arm's length from the policy process, academics bring an independent view to highly charged issues and a credibility to the findings.

General medical care, women’s health services, allergy shots, nutrition assessments, physical therapy, psychiatry, immunizations, laboratory, pharmacy, health promotion, anonymous HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, and x-ray. We provide basic, outpatient, family practice-type services. We also provide urgent care services (minor suturing, splinting, intravenous therapy) for acute injuries and illnesses that cannot wait for an appointment.

Clinical trials generally assess the efficacy of a treatment, that is, the benefits of a treatment under highly controlled conditions in a selected population. Health services research studies the effectiveness of a treatment, that is, the benefit gained from a treatment when used under normal or "real world" conditions" by practicing physicians on a broad range of patients. It includes analysis of the appropriateness of use of the treatment as well as the outcomes of that therapy on health.

Health services research can play five critical roles in formulating and implementing effective public policy. These include documentation, analysis, prescription, assessment and education. Documentation includes gathering, cataloging and correlating facts that depict the state of affairs that policy makers hope to change, illustrating problems not known to exist or emphasizing the severity of important concerns not fully appreciated.

The Lesbian Health Research Center (LHRC) is specifically and uniquely concerned with the health and well-being of lesbians, bisexual women, transgender individuals, and their families, and with the health care available to them.

Dr. John Eisenberg, Commissioner of the Agency for Health Research and Quality, described health services research as a part of the overall continuum of biomedical research that begins with basic medical science and extends through clinical investigations to research on the organization, financing and delivery of health care. This continuum is displayed in the figure below.

The National Information Center on Health Services Research & Health Care Technology "coordinates the development of information products and services related to health services research.

There is no charge for most of our services as we are supported, in part, by student fees. Our center also supplies several medications and treatments at no additional cost. If a medication or treatment is required that is not in our formulary, you will be required to purchase them on your own. You are also responsible for laboratory, radiology or specialty referrals and treatments. We offer certain lab testing and immunizations at low cost here at the health center.

The Health Center provides contraceptives to women students through the Women's Health Clinic. In addition, condoms are provided free of charge at the Health Center.
