The most successful bat houses are those mounted on a building or a chimney at a height of 15 feet or more. In cooler climates the bat house should be mounted facing the south or east. In warmer climates all directions have proved successful. The house should face a clearing and be located away from branches or power lines. Bat houses with ventilation slots on the side should be mounted so the slots will not be obstructed by the eaves of the building.

Although bats rarely contract rabies, those that are found on the ground are more likely to be sick (or injured) and may bite in self-defense when handled. Consequently, children should be taught to never handle bats and pets should be vaccinated against rabies. If a bat is found grounded do not handle it with bare hands. Use leather gloves or a thick cloth to gently gather up the bat. Place the bat into a box, affix a lid and call a wildlife rehabilitator or organization for help.

Excluding bats from roost site is only effective solution. Exclusion is inadvisable between April and August because flightless young bats may be trapped inside and killed. Bats in general, provide a useful function, by eating insects. We have more information available online.

The house may not be mounted in a good location or the house may be a poor design. Be wary of bat houses that seem small, offer no ventilation and do not have screened or grooved surfaces to provide proper foot holds. If you have already purchased a bat house that you suspect is a poor design, try modifying the house by adding the above recommendations.

Bat houses mounted on buildings probably offer the safest location from predators. To prevent animals from climbing, predator guards or tin should be wrapped around poles on which bat houses are mounted.

Many people think that by spreading bat guano on or near their bat house, it will attract a bat colony. This has not been scientifically proven, and this is generally discouraged because of the risk of exposure to harmful bacteria than can exist in the guano.

While it is not necessary to paint a bat house, doing so can often help in regulating the temperature inside the house. Bat houses in warmer areas, such as the southern United States, may benefit from light colored paint. Cooler areas, such as the northern U. One easy way to find out whether or not your bat house is occupied is to look for bat guano (bat droppings) under or near the bat house. Another way is to shine a strong flashlight up into the house. It is recommended that you only do this once a week, as frequently disturbing a colony can cause them to abandon the bat house.

Bat houses are relatively maintenance free, so you should not have to clean your bat house. General maintenance, such as repainting the house, should be done when the bats have left to hibernate for the winter.

Attracting a colony can take some time, and many different factors are involved in the process. The first consideration is the location of the house. Is it up high enough? Certain animals, such as bats, insects and snails, are known to carry zoonotic diseases. Bats are known to carry rabies and histoplasmosis. Importing such animals for any reason requires permits from CDC and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. CDC permits are issued by CDC's Etiologic Agent Import Program, whose guidelines and forms can be found on their website. Because bats can be infected with and transmit rabies, permits are not granted for importing bats as pets.
