It is not necessary to wait until you have taken the LSAT. You may submit your application anytime between October 1st and the application deadline (March 15th). Once you have tested, the Law School Admissions Council will automatically forward your LSAT score to the law school.

This program primarily attracts foreign lawyers with a first degree in law who would like to increase their understanding of American legal principles or to hone their skills in specialized areas. From this popular LL.M. program, we enroll 55-60 students.

Because of the class meeting times and the amount of course work required of full-time students at Columbia Law School, it is impossible to maintain a full-time job at the same time. Applicants must select one area of specialization within the LL.M. program. For example, applicants must choose to apply to either to the LL.M. in Public Service Law or the LL.M. in International Law.

Law classes typically begin between August 22-27 for the fall semester and between January 11-13 for the spring semester. However, orientation for international LL.M. students will begin approximately 2 weeks before classes begin in the fall and approximately 1 week before classes begin in the spring. In addition, registration and check-in as well as other orientation activities will take place before the first day of class.

The LL.M. program is designed for foreign-trained lawyers. However, those with a U.S. J.D. degree may apply for the LL.M. thesis, S.J.D. or Ph.D. programs.

The Duke LLM program for foreign law graduates is available only to applicants who have completed their law studies in a non-American university or comparable institution.

The JD/LLM Program in International and Comparative Law is designed for students to study for both the JD degree and the LLM degree at the same time. This is a joint degree program that differs from the LLM program for foreign lawyers and uses a different application form. applicant must hold the academic degree regarded as his or her country’s first professional degree in law (equivalent to a U.S. J.D. degree). Virtually all members of the LL.M. class at Virginia Law are from abroad. In general, Virginia Law does not admit students who have received an LL.M. degree from another U.S. school.

LL.M. is Latin for Legum Magister, signifying Master of Laws. In Latin abbreviations, the plural form of a word is indicated by doubling the letter - hence the "LL." is short for Laws. The word "legum" is the possessive plural form of the Latin word lex that means specific laws.

Mandatory orientation for the Graduate Legal Studies Program is on August 12, 2007. Classes start August 22, 2007. It is important to determine a law school’s quality and reputation before beginning a course. One way to assess the quality of an LL.M. program is to consult the various published law school rankings. Students planning to study in the United States should make sure the university they want to apply for is approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). This is particularly important for students who intend to earn their degree through distance learning.

Of course, if you plan to study for an LL.M. at an institution that does not teach in English, you do not have too much to worry about. Many law schools, however, provide some if not all of their instruction in English. Most English-speaking schools have established ways of assessing an applicant’s English ability if they are not native speakers. The most common standard examination of English proficiency in the United States is the TOEFL.

Applicants ordinarily hold a first degree in law from an accredited institution outside the United States. The law degree should be the equivalent of the JD or LLB degree. Applicants who intend to sit for the New York bar exam following graduation should be aware of the requirements of legal education before applying to take the New York bar exam. Rules for admission of attorneys who studied law in a country other than the U.S.

Yes. Current Cornell LL.M. students must submit a transfer application no later than April 1st. The transfer procedures and requirements will, in general, be the same as those applied to J.D. students at other law schools who seek to transfer into our J.D. program, except the LSAT is not required. If there is room in the J.D. program, the Admissions Committee will admit students when their grades in our LL.M.

Maybe. Several of our students have been able to fulfill the requirements to qualify for the New York bar exam while completing the LL.M. degree. In general, you need a minimum of two courses in basic American law from the approved subject list. Our academic services group will work with students to confirm enrollment and degree completion. It may be necessary for you to take more than the minimum 40 units to achieve both the program requirements and the NY bar subjects.

LL.M. students may certainly apply for admission into the J.D. program and their application will be considered along with all others received for this program. If accepted, LL.M. students may request the School of Law to transfer credits earned as an LL.M. student to their J.D. degree. The Law School will consider these requests on a case by case basis. Enrolling in a J.D. program after graduating from a LL.M.

Yes. There are several states that permit international LL.M. graduates to take their bar examination. Many of these states have additional requirements that may preclude an LL.M. graduate from taking the bar. We recommend that international students interested in a bar examination check with the Board of Law Examiners of the state where they wish to take the bar to see if they are eligible. Yes. International students wishing to extend their stay in the United States after receiving their LL.M. degree are able to do so with Optional Practical Training (OPT). Students completing the LL.M. Program on an F-1 student visa are eligible for up to twelve months of OPT authorized by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS, formerly known as the INS). OPT must be directly related to a student's field of study and appropriate to the level of education.
