There are generally three types of postgraduate degrees you can choose from. Postgraduate degrees tend to be organised around small group discussions and practical work, which are both distinguishing features of UK higher education. They also tend to differ by subject, coursework, and the types of assessment. Master's degree courses normally consist of lectures, seminars and classes.

Brunel offers postgraduate taught programmes leading to MA and MSc degrees as well as MRes degrees which prepare students for research degree study. Normally these programmes are one year long if taken full time. We also offer research degree programmes leading to the award of MPhil, MTh, DBA, EdD, PhD, EngD and NewRoutePhD. The MPhil and MTh are normally 1 year long, the PhD, EdD and DBA 3 years and the EngD and NewRoutePhD 4 years.

Undergraduate courses include Bachelor degrees, Associate degrees, Advanced Diplomas, Diplomas and Certificate IV. Diplomas generally require two years full-time study and Certificate IV courses generally require one-year full-time study and can be (but not always) the first year qualification of a Diploma. Postgraduate courses are higher degrees and diplomas designed for those who already hold a degree or diploma.

For an undergraduate course, you will need an application pack from UCAS. We are unable to consider direct applications to undergraduate programmes. For a postgraduate course, you will need to complete an application form that is available from any one of the following sources: Alternatively you may request an application pack for either a taught or research course from the Educational and International Liaison Office (EILO).

In contrast to Austria, where the first degree is a Magister or a Diplom, the first degree in the UK is a Bachelor's. It can be either a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) or a B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science). The Scottish 'ancient' universities award a Master's as the first degree; it is equivalent to a Bachelor's. Undergraduate courses are those leading to this degree. Postgraduate courses are all courses that come after the undergraduate, or first-degree, level.

Generally speaking, for a research degree you can start your course at any time. There are advantages to starting in September. For example, if you're an international student you can attend an induction and get help in finding accommodation. If you're applying for a degree with coursework, you'll start no later than April (if the course starts in September).

There is no set deadline for applying, but you should aim to have returned your form to the Admissions Office by the end of August.

Students who are seeking a second undergraduate degree do not have to fulfill the ISUComm Foundation Courses (First-Year Composition) requirement unless their undergraduate degree was earned from an institution outside the United States or from a non-English institution in the United States. A waiver must be processed for these students. Students who are in graduate school do not have to fulfill the ISUComm Foundation Courses (First-Year Composition) requirement.

CQU’s postgraduate degrees can be carried out through either a coursework program or by research – some programs are a mixture of both. Coursework programs require students to complete a structured plan of study and sometimes to specialise in a particular area. Research higher degrees involve supervised research and study in a specific area, leading to the preparation of a thesis.

Yes, provided the postgraduate course is ‘postgraduate in time’. See Concurrent Teaching Policy (MOPP C/7.9). Where a postgraduate course in ‘postgraduate in time’ or ‘non-cognate’, a student can be enrolled in a maximum of four undergraduate units. For ‘postgraduate in level’ or ‘cognate’ courses, students must be enrolled in postgraduate units.
