You can see if the media importer reads the source video codec by checking the "Input Video Properties" in the upper left portion of the Vid/Aud tab. If nothing appears in that box, you may not have the required codecs installed. You should make sure you have the complete install of the free Quicktime Player and the free Windows Media Player.
