Blue Ribbons, Bitter Bread, the biography of Joice Loch, Australia’s most decorated woman. I spent three years researching that book. Blue Ribbons has raised $8,000 for refugee programmes. Jake and I wrote the sequel To Hell and Back together. It is the story of Joice’s husband, Sydney Loch who fought with the 2nd Battalion at Gallipoli.

The Joy of Cooking would have to be up there, but not so much as a cookbook - more as a reference book. It has info on just about any ingredient and gives a good starting point for recipes. I love Anthony Bourdain's "Les Halles" Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking. It's a well written, witty book with lots of great techniques and classic French recipes.

You can, of course, “just read it”, since it’s a plain text file, but the markup tags in the document may prove distracting. Most of the time, even TeX experts will typeset a TeX file before attempting to read it. So, you need to typeset the document. The good news is that TeX systems are available, free, for most sorts of computer; the bad news is that you need a pretty complete TeX system even to read a single file, and complete TeX systems are pretty large.

Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, absolutely blew me away this past year. Alice Hoffman’s The Third Angel (which arrives in April 2008) is gorgeous.

Patrick Oâ??Brian wrote an incredible series of stories about a sea captain in Nelsonâ??s time. Iâ??m a big Terry Pratchett fan as well. His books are the sort I have to buy in hardback because I canâ??t wait for the paperback version to come out.

Threshold, because it was a special book (hard to define why - but one of the reasons was because it was such a relief to get away from High Heroic Fantasy and do something very different; also the characters were particularly wonderful to work with). I loved doing The Crucible, though, as I could indulge my love of medieval history, and I'm looking forward to The Troy Game so much you wouldn't believe. No, actually. It was needed for the plot, and I think it works.

I'm one of those writers who tend to write regardless of circumstances. If there's a hurricane, a flood, a death, an illness, I write through the experience. It's how I cope. I can point to each one of my books and tell you if I was undergoing some trauma at the time. The book itself has become a catharsis, and consequently, I feel a special bond to it. Those books are Tapestry, My Beloved, After the Kiss. But that's not to say they're my favorites. I don't have one.

You have two major options—find a publisher or be your own publisher. Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages. In either case you will need to identify your audience, understand the competition, and know why your book is unique. We suggest you start by writing a proposal for a publisher. Even if you eventually decide to self-publish, writing the proposal will help you focus your thoughts. We’ve listed some resources below. Your local library will probably have some of them.

Writing an article and then casting about for someone to publish it is the least effective way to get published. There may in fact be no publication anywhere that can use an article with exactly that focus, length, voice, kinds of sources of information, etc. You have a much better chance of success if you send off queries before you write your article and then tailor your piece to the preferences of an editor who has expressed interest in seeing it or buying it.

Oh, when I was counter manager with fragrances at B. Altman’s, in New York, many years ago. So elegant and the people would come, talk and we would go out to dinner, lunch. Very sociable. I would get up in the morning and get ready but it didn’t feel like for work. Just to go out and have fun. That was really, really nice.

I've got hundreds of favourite books so there's no way I can just pick one. But I try to read everything by writers such as James Berry, Philip Pullman, Philip Ridley, Catherine Johnson, Jacqueline Roy, Jacqueline Wilson, Melvin Burgess, etc. One book that would be in my top ten though would be Holes by Louis Sacher. If you haven't read it, get hold of a copy as soon as possible. I thought it was brilliant!!

That is a hard question, because while I'm writing them, I get completely absorbed in each and every story. Backstreets is probably the work that is most personally significant to me, because there is so much in it that came from my deepest emotions. The death of my stepson completely changed the world for me - nearly destroyed it in fact - and in some ways that novel is about me trying to re-build the world again.

If possible, put it away for a while; then take it out and re-work it. Most stories benefit from editing. Like all aspects of writing, editing improves with practice.

Some of the best books on the subject were written years ago. Edward Thorp's Beat the Dealer is the book that started it all and, although outdated, is still a must read. Peter Griffin's Theory of Blackjack explains the mathematics of the game. My book, Blackjack: A Professional Reference is considered by many as the best resource guide available.
