The Clarkston ISS labs are on the second floor of the Jim Cherry Learning Resources Center (same building as the Library) in rooms 2232 and 2233.

Tutors are specially trained to answer questions and help students with their assignment challenges. Math tutors are available on a drop-in basis whenever the lab (LA 201) is open (M - H 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The Writing and Math Requirement for computation must be met with at least three (3) credits of a pure math course (like algebra, trigonometry, calculus, etc.). The remaining 3 credits can be in statistics, computer science, logic or math.

The University provides math and writing labs to all students. They are staffed by upper-class students majoring in math and English. The math lab is open on a drop-in basis whereas the writing lab is available both for drop-ins and by appointment. These services are held in different locations on campus and thus a student with a disability must be highly motivated and independent enough to follow through with using these resources.

While the Writing Lab tutors specifically work only with freshman composition courses: 097, 098 and 155, as well as University 100, the Writing Center consultants work with any students writing papers for any other courses across the disciplines. For any writer, it's useful to get reactions from a reader on work in progress. In addition, Consultants provide strategies for students preparing to take the CBEST or the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam (UDWPE).

It is not so much "testing out of" as it is "placing into" the appropriate course. Math is inherently more linear and cumulative, hence there is more agreement and consensus about what constitutes a good placement test. Writing, in contrast, is more holistic and open-ended. Even the best student writers are inexperienced in composing analyses and arguments. For them we propose an honors-level freshman course.

Written or oral responses to questions can provide a great deal of insight into students' understanding of ideas or concepts. This also gives them an opportunity to clarify and consolidate their understanding of a concept and to reflect on what they have learned and how they have learned it. Writing can be used at the end of a class to provide immediate feedback regarding what the students learned during a class period.

Bring in any kind of writing assignment for any class or any other writing project, such as your resume, cover letter, application essay, etc. Talking with a tutor helps a writer clarify and organize his or her thoughts.

Don't come with a finished draft that's due soon. You won't be able to make significant changes that will occur to you after talking with a tutor.

We can't proofread a paper for you. That would make us better editors, but wouldn't help you become a better writer. But, we will help you learn how to be a better proofreader.

The Open Computer Lab is designed for students who need to use Word and other Microsoft Office programs and classroom software. It is located in Bladen Hall, Room 104. The Open Computer Lab operates Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 10:00 pm; Friday 8 am – 5 pm; Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. During Intersession (mini-semester between semesters) the lab is open Monday through Friday only, 8 am – 4:30 pm.

Lab tests should include a CBC, chemistry panel, lipid profile, thyroid panel, and urinalysis. If you are over age 40 or have a history of heart disease, you should have an EKG done as well.

Lab fees are used for tape stock, DVDs, and editing room facilities and equipment associated with some of the media camps.
