Frequently Asked Questions

What causes buckled or bulging lids?

Buckling that is apparent immediately after heat processing is caused by application of the screw bands too tightly. Bernardin home canning closures are made in two pieces for a very important reason ñ to release pressure and vent air from the jar during heat processing. As the filled jar is heated headspace pressure increases until excess air is vented from the jar. When the band is applied too tightly, there is no give between the lid and the rim of the jar to vent this pressure.

What causes the undersides of jar lids to dis-color?

Canning & Preserving - Canning Fruit
Natural compounds in some foods, particularly acids, corrode metal and make a dark deposit on the underside of jar lids. This deposit is harmless providing the jar has a good seal and the contents have been properly processed.
Related Questions

What causes lids to buckle?

WSU Clark County Extension
Putting the screw bands on so tightly that air can hardly escape from the jars during processing. The buildup of pressure inside jars causes lids to buckle. Screw bands should be tightened firmly, by hand, So do not use a jar wrench to tighten screw bands. The best advice to is tighten the ring to finger tight. And remember when you take the jars out of the canner, the rings will be loose. DO NOT tighten them. Let them sit and cool.

Are bulging or herniated discs normal?

Center for Spine Care - Frequently Asked Questions About Bac...
No, they are not normal. The normal shape or morphology of the disc is that it should be a uniform height with an abundant fluid content without any bulging of the disc wall into the spinal canal. A bulging disc reflects degeneration, which is physiologic (normal) process of aging, but the disc itself is not normal. It is showing signs of wear-and-tear. A herniated disc obviously is not normal. It is essentially a torn or broken disc.

What is a bulging disk ?

Lumbar Disk FAQ - FAQ Lumbar Disc
It's a disk whose edge is bulging into the spinal canal ,where the nerves traverse to the foramina. This can be produced by swelling of the nucleus, diminishing of the intervertebral space, etc. In most cases is asymptomatic and it is merely a radiological finding. But if this bulge is big enough it will impinge the nerves, giving the symptoms and signs of a herniated disk and for practical purposes it has to be considered as such.
Related Questions

Is it true that a bulging disc can be normal?

Back Pain Frequently Asked Questions - Back Pain FAQ's
Yes. Some discs bulge normally, as part of the normal variation that is part of being human (tall vs short). As we age, the surrounding supporting fibers tend to stretch. This will allow some bulging of the disc, without an injury, and without pain. Under normal conditions, our discs are designed to slightly bulge during normal activities. This allows our spine to absorb the tremendous forces we expose it to everyday.

What is the difference between a herniated disc and a bulging disc?

Center for Spine Care - Frequently Asked Questions About Bac...
A bulging disc represents degenerative disc disease. The disc is showing signs of wear-and-tear. It is losing some of its fluid content and therefore, it is drying out. As it dries out, the disc tends to decrease in height, or it starts to settle. As it does this, the wall of the disc tends to bulge or buckle outward. It generally bulges in a symmetric manner, much like the side walls of a deflated automobile tire would tend to bulge outward in a symmetric fashion.

Chris Urban M.D.
Loss of the normal structural integrity of the intervertebral disc can lead to either a bulging or herniated disc shape. Bulging discs are very common and develop in most individuals as we age. A disc bulge is a diffuse symmetrical swelling of the disc and is caused by early disc degeneration and collapse. Bulging discs rarely cause symptoms unless associated with spinal stenosis. In contrast, a herniated disc is one in which the outer layer of the disc, called the annulus, is incompetent.

The precise cause of Vulvodynia is unknown. Some of the theories on causality include: a viral, fungal or bacterial infection; an allergic response to an environmental irritant; an autoimmune response to the body’s own chemistry; trauma; or the result of pelvic floor muscle instability. There is no clear connection of Vulvodynia to sexually transmitted disease as many of the young women affected are not yet sexually active.

Some studies suggest that because these abnormalities are more common in older women, Vanishing Twin Syndrome occurs more often in mothers of advanced age.

Is it all right to reuse jar fittings (lids and bands)?

National Center for Home Food Preservation | Canning FAQs
Lids should not be used a second time since the sealing compound becomes indented by the first use, preventing another airtight seal. Screw bands may be reused unless they are badly rusted or the top edge is pried up which would prevent a proper seal.

The lids to plastic bottles are made of different grades of plastic than the bottle itself. These grades of plastic are not recyclable in Washington, and mixing lids in with plastic bottles will diminish the value of bottle-grade plastic collected in that fashion.

Can caps and lids be recycled?

Recycling FAQ - Gaiam Community
Generally, removing bottle caps and lids is a good recycling habit, because their recyclability depends on the equipment your local recycler uses and what the lid is made of. Often it’s as much a safety issue as a recycling issue; the pressure that builds up in a sealed plastic bottle can blow a whole bale of plastic and potentially injure workers.

Do you know of any sources of new jars with glass lids?

Frequently Asked Questions -- Fruit Jars
The familiar term Mason Jar came after its inventor, Mr. John L. Mason, who, at age 26, was a tinsmith in New York City. He perfected a machine that could cut threads into lids, which ushered in the ability of manufacturing a jar with a reusable, screw-on, lid. These jars freed farm families from having to rely on pickle barrels, root cellars, and smoke houses to get through the winter. For urban families, Mason Jars allowed excess fruits and vegetables to be preserved for use later.

What is the difference between a slipped disc, a herniated disc or a bulging disc?

BodyZone -- Frequently Asked Questions
They are all the same thing. A herniated, slipped or bulging disc is like a bubble in the sidewall of a car tire. The jelly in the center of the disc pushes the weakened part of the disc outwards creating a bulge. This bulge can press on a nerve or other delicate spinal structures.
