For a while in the 1990's, Nyle Steiner, the inventor of the EWI and EVI, was offering a service to convert an EWI3000 or EWI3020 to an EVI type controller. With the release of his latest model- the MIDI EVI and the Akai EWI4000s with its EVI fingering mode- he no longer offers this service. You would provide him with an EWI controller (EWI3000 or later) and he would "gut" it and put the innards into a newly redesigned EVI body.

Like the Yamaha WX series, the Akai EWIs (Electronic Wind Instruments) are based on saxophone or woodwind fingering. The EVI was based on brass type fingering. All Akai EWI models and the EVI1000 have touch sensitive keys which can take some getting used to, since just touching a key produces a note, i.e. you can't rest your fingers on the keys like on a real woodwind instrument. To counter this Akai offered the EWI-FR finger rest.

The MIDI EVI is a totally self-contained, trumpet-style MIDI controller. It is currently being made by hand by Nyle Steiner in Provo Utah. The MIDI EVI outputs MIDI directly from the controller thus eliminating the need for an additional interface box and also opening up the possibility of going wireless! The MIDI EVI actually has a MIDI OUT jack right on the body of the instrument so it connects directly to a MIDI synthesizer or sampler directly.

Many MIDI EVI players are unaware that the instrument has a cool remote control volume feature. This allows you to make overall adjustments to the volume of your synth(s) without having to physically touch your synth rack. This new EWI features battery operation, a built-in analog modeled synth with digital effects and 100 user editable patches, MIDI IN and OUT, PC/MAC Editor for the internal synth, and much more. On the EWI4000s, everthying is self-contained. The older EWI models (EWI1000, EWI3000, EWI3020) required a companion sound modeul connected via a proprietary (and expensive) EWI connecting cable. Yes, there is an Akai EVI1000 fingering chart available here: PAGE 1 and PAGE 2. It can be applied to the MIDI EVI as well. Note that these charts have been corrected. The original charts found in the Akai EVI1000 manual had several errors and were later corrected by Patchman Music.

The MIDI EVI defaults to sending MIDI Volume (CC#7) and a fixed velocity of 127. Each time you turn on the MIDI EVI, you will want to set it to send breath controller data (CC#2) and variable velocity. To do this: Put your left hand thumb between the 2nd and 3rd octave rollers (do not touch the left hand ring), AND finger the 1st TRILL key AND the 3rd VALVE key, AND touch the furthest right hand pinky sensor.

The current Yamaha model wind controller is the WX5. The current Akai wind controller model is the EWI4000s. The Akai EWI3000, EWI3020, and Yamaha WX11, WX7, and WindJamm'r have all been discontinued. All of the commercially made controllers are incredibly expressive when all the parts of the system are in place and properly set up.

On the EWI, pitchbend via the vibrato (bite) sensor always returns to center pitch after a very short time interval- even if you keep biting the mouthpiece. If you bite, the pitch goes in a positive direction. When you release, the bend goes in a negative direction. If at any point along the way you hold the bite at a certain level, the pitchbend data will always return to the zero point. For this reason, I sometimes refer to the EWI bite sensor as a "wiggle sensor".

This was more of a problem with the original model EWIs and EVIs. Newer models have greatly improved this. If you have tried adjusting the Key Sensitivity knob on the EWI and still have trouble with the sensors not sensing your fingers you might try a hand lotion with a high Glycerin count. Corn Huskers Lotion or KY seems to work well. Look at the ingredients and notice if Glycerin is the first one listed.
