Frequently Asked Questions

Should I crate my dog?

Frequently asked questions
Some people feel that crating their dog is like putting them in prison. I personally disagree. I have 3 dogs and all 3 are different ages and sizes, but all can equal a lot of trouble!! I crate them when I am at work, when I go to bed and when I am going to be out of the house for a couple hours. They LOVE going into their "dens" mostly because they each get a treat when they go in. I make sure that the crates are large enough for each pet to turn and stand.

How do I crate train my dog?

IONX ? Cell Lyte FORMULA
Answer Crate training is a great way to help your dog feel comfortable and secure while you are away and will protect your house from damage caused by anxious pups. When you are gone dogs can either sleep or get in trouble. If you limit their options by providing a site where all they can do is sleep, you will save your house and protect your pet from harm. Get a crate of adequate size (large enough to allow your dog to stand and move comfortably) to accommodate your dog.

Will my dog chew up his Crate Wear?

Dog Crate Cover FAQ
Very few dogs exhibit a desire to chew their own personal beds. Always make sure there are appropriate toys & treats to keep your dog's attention in the crate. Crate Wear bumpers help protect his teeth from the wire bars and can be sprayed with a taste deterrent like Bitter Apple. It's better to chew on a toy or on a Crate Wear Bumper than to chew the crate's metal bars, which can result in expensive veterinary bills and permanent tooth damage.

Why should I crate train my puppy/dog?

Welcome to Peaceable Paws Dog & Puppy Training
The crate is an extremely valuable behavior management tool. It takes much of the pain out of puppy-raising by keeping your pup safely confined when you can't directly supervise her. Puppies are usually housetrained in a surprisingly short time with the use of a crate, and the crate gives you peace of mind, knowing that your dog isn't peeing and pooping all over the house, or chewing on electric cords and antique furniture when you're not there to watch her.

Do I have to bring a crate for my dog?

Frequently Asked Questions about Canine Weight Pulling
A crate is not essential to weight pulling, but I strongly suggest you purchase one. Tie-out areas at pulls are usually pretty small, so crates are usually a good idea. When your dog is in a crate you do not have to worry about him/her being bothered by spectators or loose dogs.

How do I stop my dog from whining or barking the crate?

Dog Crate Cover FAQ
Again, make sure the crate is in a good location. Veterinarians and trainers recommend covering the crate to give your dog the privacy he needs to feel secure. If your dog can see you, he'll want to be with you outside the crate. Crate covers lower the amount of distractions your dog sees, which reduces barking and stress. Note: Dogs that suffer from separation anxiety should not be crated.

What is crate training?

Frequently Asked Questions about Toy, Tiny, and Teacup Poodl...
Put your puppy in a small pet carrier or crate while you are busy or gone. Puppies will not use the bathroom where they sleep. Once you get home or the puppy starts crying, immediately take them outside or to the area they are to use the bathroom. Always reward them with a treat. This is supposed to be a very effective way to train your dog. If the crate or cage is too big, however, it will not work. There is lots of good information on the web on how to crate train a dog.

My dog has gotten a bloody nose in the crate. What's happening?

Crate Training FAQ
Some dogs instinctively like to "burrow" or dig with their noses. When they do this in a metal wire kennel, their nose can become raw or bloody. Cratewear crate pads and bumpers will prevent this type of crate-related injury. We've had a terrible problem with our 11 month old Miniature Dachshund and his crate. Everyday when we left him in his crate, he would rub the top of his nose against the metal until it was raw and bloody.

Can the Regular crate & Long crate be used together?

FAQ
Yes they can. Many people use them as two separate crates for two dogs, or they use one for home and one for travel. Of course, using the Regular crate with the Long crate, using the extender kit, gives the animal more room to move around and stretch their legs, which no other crate can offer. Yes. Because the Homestretch? crate is so light, a heavy wind can pick it up easily. On each corner of the house is a loop, made just for those windy days.

SHOULD I CRATE TRAIN?

Border Terrier Frequently Asked Questions
YES!Not only is a crate a useful housebreaking tool, but it gives your Border (both young and old) a place to call home and get away from it all. Young puppies often need a break from zealous young owners, and as long as you don't use the crate for punishment, crating your dog for brief periods gives you a break as well. Additionally, a crate provides a safe environment for a Border in the house, car, hotel rooms and even airplanes. An open crate in the house gives the dog a safe den.

DO YOUR PUPPIES COME CRATE TRAINED?

Woodcrest Kennel LLC - Airedale Terriers - FAQ & Policie...
No. If you want a crate trained Airedale, you will need to get an adult. We are glad to offer advice and suggestions to help in the process. We do our best to introduce the concept of the crate to the puppies while they are with us. Most new owners find that the puppy adjusts easily to the crate in the new home in just a couple days. There are crates with dividers that can be expanded as the puppy grows to fit the full size of the crate. Puppies must be crated when unsupervised.

What is a crate?

COCKER SPANIEL RESCUE OF EAST TEXAS - HOUSTON
Wire kennels or plastic crates are used to contain pets. The cost ranges from between $60 and $120 and can be purchased at most pet stores. Some rescues prefer the openness of a wire kennel; others like the den-like atmosphere of a plastic crate. The kennel or crate should be very large so that the rescue has plenty of room. The wire kennel collapses for storage and takes up less space than the plastic crate. Dogs usually crate train (learn not to pee or poop in the crate) fairly quickly.

What are the advantages of a Homestretch? crate?

FAQ
Safety Occasionally stories are heard of a dog getting his collar caught in the metal wire of either a plastic or metal cage. Oftentimes the result is death. To prevent this, they must often go without collar. This is definitely not safe because the animal may charge or spook when the door is opened and be lost without any identification. Because Homestretch? crates do not have cage-style metal, it is nearly impossible for a collar or tag to get caught.

How easily can a fabric crate be destroyed?

FAQ
Fabric crates can be destroyed. But then again, so can doors. I once heard a story about a dog who chewed through the back door to warn his family when their house caught fire. They later visited the vet and found out that he had splinters in his throat. Now, I'm not saying that only heroic dogs chew through either doors or cloth crates, but I'm sure that a determined dog could chew through a crate just about as well as he could chew though anything.
Related Questions

Can the Homestretch? crate be used for other animals?

FAQ
Besides cats and dogs, we know that a Homestretch? crate has been used for a pigmy goat and a pot bellied pig. There was also a woman who bought a couple for her birds in case of emergencies. In fact, they are great to have around for any animal in emergencies. They take up very little space, and you may find that you need a place to confine your animal if disaster strikes. It would be nearly impossible to drag around a large cage in an emergency. Ducks, dogs, rabbits..
