Because of its unique design, the STARLAB can accommodate visitors who are restricted to wheelchairs, have walkers or are otherwise physically challenged. Instead of having these individuals use the entrance tunnel, they can enter and exit the planetarium by going in and out under the edge of the dome. To do this, you will need a second person to assist you. Individuals who are physically challenged should be brought into the dome before the rest of the visitors.

Please call the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting at 574.245.6001. You will need to provide an application along with your handicapped license plate information and a letter from your doctor stating your disability. The Traffic & Lighting Manager will review your application and make a recommendation to the Board of Public Works. The Board will notify you of their decision by mail. Yes, our wheel chair ramp is found at the main/north entrance to the planetarium. Seating for a limited number of wheel chairs is available within the theater. Unfortunately, the Observatory stairway is not handicapped accessible at this time. We are in the process of completing a video link to the telescope. Unfortunately, no. The coaches were constructed in the early 1900's and the doorways and aisle ways are too narrow to accommodate wheel chairs. However, if a person does not require a wheelchair for total mobility, and can climb three to four stairs while being aided by our On Board Staff, they are more than welcome. Their wheelchair will be safety transported in our Baggage Car and made available for their use at the major station stopover of the day.

Yes. Visitors with disabilities should call the Box Office to arrange seating for Caramoor performances and events. Also we have parking available for visitors with disabilities. Upon your arrival advise a parking attendent that you need to be directed to the handicap parking lot. Caramoor has an infrared assistive listening system for the hearing impaired that may be picked up from the Box Office prior to concerts and lectures.

Yes. The dome does not have a solid floor; the wall of the dome wraps around and creates a skirt about 18 inches/45 cm wide which rests on the floor. To admit a person in a wheelchair, simply lift a side of the dome and push the wheelchair under. This process is much easier if you have a second person to help you lift the side of the dome. Once the dome is lowered back to the ground, it will reinflate fully in about one minute.
