DVDs use MPEG2 compression technology which uses a higher compression rate than DV. However, with a good MPEG encoder at higher bitrates (between 5,000 to 8,000kbps) you shouldn't visibly notice a reduction in quality even in scenes of higher movements. When encoding, make sure you're using a high bitrate (but below the upper limit of 8,000kbps for DVD compliance) and 2-pass variable bitrate encoding.

Sorry to say, but the answer is no. We cannot get more resolution or apparent better signal to noise ratios than what was initially recorded on your original tape to begin with. Your DVD in the case of a Vhs for example, will have no more than 240 lines of resolution, as that's all that VHS was ever capable of in the first place. If the original video was shot in black & white, then so will your transfer be in black & white.

DVD recorders can record video in resolutions ranging from DVD quality to VHS quality depending on the recording speed used, somewhat analogous to the different recording speeds on a VCR. Although there is some variation from manufacturer to manufacturer, DVD recorders typically can record in one hour, two hour, four hour, and six hour speeds. The one hour speed will be very close, if not the same, as DVD quality, while the four and six hour speeds will be more like VHS SP and EP respectively.

If the UpConverter detects a progressive scan signal it cannot utilize it's CinemaView enhancement engine to process the video. You will basically see only a resolution scaled image of the output from your DVD player. We recommend turning off the progressive setting on your DVD player so you may use the advanced Motion Adaptive De-Interlacing, noise reduction and sharpening filters on the video.
