Students pursue diverse career paths. Some find employment in Foreign Service and the intelligence community. Others are teachers in Social Studies fields, German or Russian in area high schools. Some pursue Ph.D. studies and become university professors. A number of our students have followed business careers working for US companies that conduct business internationally.

The average time to degree is one year and nine months. Those who do not have GTA responsibilities are sometimes able to finish the degree more quickly, whereas part-time students may sometimes take longer than two years to complete the needed graduate work. The program can be quite flexible to fit a student's individual needs. The M.A.

There are currently approximately 230 students enrolled at all stages of the program. About 50-60 students begin the M.A. TESOL program every Fall, and around 30-40 begin studies every Spring. Every year, 40-60 students complete the program.

Students in our M.A. program who wish to continue for a Ph.D. must apply to be considered for the program. These students will submit their applications by January 15 of the academic year they anticipate completing the M.A. For more information, see our degree information page.

Theoretically it is possible to complete the program in less than two years, if a full-time student takes courses in the summer terms. However, with the requirement of a professional paper (similar to writing a journal article), it would be rare for a full-time student to finish in less than two years.

The MA TESOL has a balance of about half international students and about half domestic students. In terms of undergraduate work, some students have backgrounds in linguistics, psychology or education. Other students have backgrounds in unrelated topics such as chemistry. It is generally helpful to demonstrate at least some experience or interest in teaching in your application, for example tutoring migrants, if you have an unrelated undergraduate major.

The MA program (clinical track) has a typical cohort of 6-12 students. The MA program (experimental track) has a typical cohort of 2-6 students. The Ph.D. program has a typical cohort of 3-5 students. The Counseling Masters offered through the College of Education is designed to prepare students to work in school based settings or community counseling. The program is much more focused on the practice of counseling and not research. Students in the community track are prepared for the LPC.

of December 2002 the approximate number of students in the PhD program is 170, more than half of whom have completed coursework and are researching and writing the dissertation. The number of students in the PhD entering class for Fall 2002 is 13. The approximate number of students in all MA programs is 50. The number of students in the Modern Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies entering class for Fall 2004 is 16.

Examples of previous work placements include: Community Visions - CSW, Touchstone Family Services - Child & Youth Care Counselor, John Howard Society - Community Justice Worker, and Tin Harbour - Supervised visits.

Students must take eight courses in order to graduate--generally taking four per semester. Five of these eight courses must be selected from the approved TIE requirements list (details can be found in the TIE Student Handbook posted on this site). Full-time students may enroll in up to ten courses (five per semester) and incur no additional cost.

About 300 people apply to the MA program each year. Approximately fifty percent of applicants are admitted.

Our program has all kinds of students, of diverse ages and backgrounds. Many have taught English abroad or in the U.S., and wish to obtain a M.A. to get a solid foundation in current theory and methodology in TESOL as well as to be competitive for the best ESL/EFL teaching jobs. Many others have no ESL/EFL teaching experience but are attracted to the field because they think they will enjoy working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The time by which students are expected to complete the PhD program is six years for most fields. It is seven years for fields requiring extensive language training (i.e., Africa, Ancient Greece and Rome, Byzantine, East Asia, Jewish, Medieval, Middle East, and South Asia).

Most students complete their internships during the summer after their junior year. However, if a great opportunity comes available jump on it during the fall or summer after completing MGT 310.

If students are considered co-investigators on the project and are listed on the Proposal Routing and Approval Form, or the PI determines that they are independently responsible for the design, conduct or reporting of the research and outcomes then they are required to complete the proposal certification and the annual disclosure questionnaire.

Students will begin the program fall semester each year. Students should complete the program within two years. Students must be enrolled in the program on a full-time basis and will not be allowed to complete the program on a part-time basis.

Yes, a Certificate in Pharmacy Regulation and Policy is awarded to a student who completes any five 3-credit courses. There is no requirement for seminar attendance or for a comprehensive exam to receive a Certificate in Pharmacy Regulation and Policy.

Internships are not a requisite part of the program nor do we give credits for such work. Our faculty can help up to a point (e.g. with contacts at the National Galley), but mostly, students seek out their own opportunities. If you are willing to work on a volunteer basis, and are proactive in seeking the work, there is typically something available.

MA students are funded in a variety of ways, including departmental funding of Federal work-study awards, serving as a departmental TA, and other positions within the department. Additionally, some MA students are funded as an RA in their research mentor’s lab. It is important to clarify these sources of funding with your mentor or with the department. No. You are free to choose the mentor you wish to work with once you are admitted to the program.

School-wide, over 50% of all financial aid applicants receive some sort of financial assistance, in the form of loans, scholarships and grants. Only those applicants who actually apply using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline are considered. Most departmental funding is geared to doctoral students.

The MA portion of the MA/PhD program, also called the MA Plan I, is quite different in focus and intent from the terminal master’s degree program, also called the MA Plan II. Plan I is specifically designed to prepare for and lead on to a PhD; Plan II is a final degree.

Most students enter the MBA program at TUJ with the encouragement and support, often financial, of the company for which they work. However, the Career Development Office at TUJ can help students who would like to change companies or careers.

M.A. students must fund the program themselves, either through personal finances or loans. We are not able to offer any teaching assistantships to M.A. students.

You can definitely enroll part time in the Masters program. Although most students complete the programs in the regular 2 year time frame, we regularly have students who choose to be on the 3 year plan. For clinical MA students, this means that they would not enroll in their Practicum training until the start of the third year. For experimental students, the three year plan affords more opportunities to publish and present research papers. For the Ph.D.

The main difference is that this accelerated program may be completed in five years rather than six, because candidates will take two graduate (500-level) seminars during the senior year and two 400-level courses that double-count toward the BA and the MA. The level of academic excellence is equivalent to that of any Master's program.
