The shelter will take a lost report of your animal by phone, but we suggest that you come by and check the kennels in person as only you know your dog or cat. You may also try running an ad in the local newspaper, check with other area city shelters and post flyers in the neighborhood. Lost reports are kept on file for three months but we recommend you visit the shelter every few days.

NO, a shelter will NOT "hold" an animal for you. If the animal's available date has arrived, the animal will be adopted out to the first person who arrives to adopt the animal. Also, if the animal's available date has arrived, and the animal is sick, is not getting along well with shelter workers or with other shelter animals, or if the shelter is crowded, the animal may be euthanized.

Unfortunately, the answer is usually NO. We would love to be able to do this, but, in general, we do not have enough volunteers to help in this way. Sort of. Until recently, Nancy Phelan ran a very productive animal shelter. They city, for whatever reason, has closed her down and will not let her take in animals and care for them. She is still collecting and distributing pet food, pet toys and medicine and trying to continue her spay and neuter program. The Town Lake Animal Center animal control officers pick up stray dogs seven days a week. If you notice a stray dog or cat and cannot provide for its health and safety needs yourself, you'll do a great service by reporting it to the Animal Control unit or bringing it to TLAC. At the center, the animal will receive food, water and shelter. We do our best to find new homes for animals that are suitable as pets.

In Arizona, the law states that if you keep a dog or cat and care for it for six consecutive days, you automatically become the owner of the animal. If you desire to keep the dog or cat for yourself, it is wise for you to contact Animal Care and Control to report finding the animal. That way you have proof as to the length of time it has been in your possession should the original owner come along at a later date and want the animal back.

If the dog or cat has a license or an ID tag, you can call the phone number listed on the tag to make contact with the owner. If you cannot contact the owner or if the animal is not wearing a tag, the law requires that you turn in the animal to the animal control agency that serves the area where you found the animal, so that the owner will have a better chance of finding his or her lost pet.

After searching your own neighborhood, stop by your local animal shelter to report the lost pet, view the strays at the shelter and check through found reports. You can visit the shelter as often as you wish, but you should at least try and stop in every couple of days to make sure the animal has not been brought in. Descriptions of the same animal can vary from one person to the next, so don't rely on a phone call to identify your pet.
