No hearing instrument can completely eliminate background noise. In fact, background noise is 'normal'. Most of the time background noise is speech, which is the exact same signal that the hearing aid is trying to amplify. Some hearing instruments can lessen the effects of non-speech noise by using specific microphones and/or technology. Background noise is a nuisance for everyone, even people with normal hearing.

Digital hearing aids that offer directional microphones, combined with noise reduction, offer very sophisticated ways of processing sound to reduce as much background noise as possible. However, the noise can not be completely eliminated by any hearing aid.

Understanding of speech, especially in noisy environments, will vary depending upon a person's degree of hearing loss, how well the hearing aids have been fitted, how frequently the hearing aids are used and the signal to noise ratio present in the environment. Many recent developments in hearing aid design help the wearer to cope with adverse listening situations.

It is important to understand that even those people with normal hearing experience difficulty understanding conversation in the presence of background noise. A hearing aid cannot eliminate background noise. However, there are hearing aid features that will reduce the undesirable impact of background noise. It is now possible to obtain a "directional" microphone, which focus on the sound in front of you, while reducing or eliminating amplification of side and back noise.

Most digital hearing aids offer directional microphones combined with noise reduction processing capabilities that greatly reduce background noise. Many current devices have the processing capabilities to determine which sounds are unnecessary, and are accordingly not amplified or even dampened. The highest noise reduction rating (NRR) currently offered by an earplug is around 33 decibels. If you refer to figure 1 in question #7, you will find that decibel levels up to the earplug's NRR rating (in this case 30 dB, which is typical of soft music), will be blocked out entirely. Hearing damage can be created for many different reasons and sources. Industrial noise is certainly the most common and serious cause of hearing damage. Many leisure time activities also contribute, such as target shooting and hunting, noisy hobbies such as woodworking, as well playing in an orchestra or simply listening to music at excessive noise levels. Another factor that contributes is heredity, and a certain level of hearing damage simply occurs from aging.
