Why does an alert appear when you have improperly disconnected the USB device?

You do this using the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon. You'll find this icon in the System Tray in the lower right corner of the screen by the clock. Double click this icon to bring up a list of running devices and you have the option of "Stopping" the device. If you do it right, Windows will tell you that it is now safe to remove the device.
