VHS picture quality can be achieved for source film video at about 1 million bits per second (with proprietary encoding methods). It is very difficult to objectively compare MPEG to VHS. The response curve of VHS places -3 dB at around 2 MHz of analog luminance bandwidth (equivalent to 200 samples/line). VHS chroma is considerably less dense in the horizontal direction than MPEG source video (compare 80 samples/ line to 176!).

RCA didn't use Lines of Resolution in their CED specifications, but a bandwidth of 3 MHz translates to about 240 Lines, the same resolution as VHS, but less than the 425 Lines of LaserDisc and 500 Lines of DVD. The subjective evaluation of people familiar with all these formats is that CED is better than VHS, but not as good as LaserDisc or DVD.

MPEG only supports 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30 and higher frame rates and the frame rate selected on bbMPEG's Video Settings page must match the frame rate of the AVI file. bbMPEG does not do any frame rate conversion, so if the AVI has a frame rate of 10fps and 30fps is selected in bbMPEG, the video will play 3 times faster than normal. MPEG file is a computer version of a video. In order for any content to be used in a computer, it needs to have a format first. In other words, VHS won't play through a computer, a computer will not recognize anything unless its formatted. An example is that your computer will not recognize a hand written letter, but it will recognize a letter that's been formatted through Microsoft Word. The same applies for video.

There is a consortium of companies (Philips, JVC, Sony, Matushista, et al) developing a metal particle based 6 millimeter consumer digital video tape format. It will initially use more JPEG-like independent frame compression for cheap encoding of source analog (NTSC, PAL) video. The consequence of course is less efficient use of bandwidth ( 25 Mbit/sec for the same quality achieved at 6 Mbit/sec with MPEG).

We have tried several methods and products for making VHS Video Captures, including an internal TV Tuner card made by Hauppauge, and the external devices Snappy (connects to LPT-1 port) and Dazzle (USB).
