For the most part, no. Some missions projects, such as Disaster Early Response Team (DERT), work in the conditions they encounter which may be hot, dusty, dirty or humid. These projects emphasize training and protective equipment to avoid accident or injury. Other service opportunities involve limited to no physical challenges. Those with physical handicaps or advanced years can still be productive members of missions teams and activities.

No, there are some missions projects such as the Andean Rural Health Project which serves mothers and children in Bolivia. Some others, such as Men’s Service Group and Mission Possible Kids, concentrate on local, primarily Plano-based, projects. The enthusiasm for learning generated between teachers and students is the biggest payoff of NOAA's Teacher at Sea/Teacher in the Field programs, where teachers from elementary school through college go to sea aboard NOAA research and survey ships or NOAA aircraft to work under the tutelage of scientists and crew. Absolutely! On all CAP missions, the responsibility of the pilot is to FLY THE AIRPLANE! This creates an opportunity for non-pilots, pilots training for mission ready capabilities, or cadets to participate in a variety of missions as Observers or Scanners. There are two other photometry mission, one that is currently operating MOST and the other under development COROT. However, they are considerably less capable than the Kepler Mission, since their primary science mission is to measure the properties of stars. COROT has 1/10 the collecting area for photons, 1/20th the field of view of the sky and stares at a given star field for 1/10 the amount of time that the Kepler Mission stares.

Avian flu currently poses only a small danger, as the virus does not normally infect animals other than birds or pigs. One case of human-human contact was suspected in Thailand in 2004. There is no vaccine to prevent H5N1 infection in human beings, although there are drugs to treat the illness.
