Absolutely. In my opinion, the black and white prints that I am making now are every bit as beautiful as traditional film prints. In fact, due to the additional tonal control that I have in Photoshop, I believe that they may even exceed traditional prints. Like the color prints, the black and white prints are just as archival as film based prints. They will not fade in your lifetime.

If you're in the Library and want to make a black/white print-out instead of color, follow the instructions for printing out a map (see Make a Map -- Basic Tutorial). Then go under File (at top of screen) and click on Print. A print window will appear where a printer can be selected. Click on the black/white printer then on the Print button.

Each input file to the render program starts with 19 header records that describe image layout and processing options. The fifth line contains three numbers which specify the RGB values for the background. 0 0 0 specifies a black background; 1 1 1 specifies a white background; 0.9 0.9 0.4 specifies a light yellow background, and so on.

Using other colors for barcodes aside from the normal black bar on a white background is highly discouraged. Though they may work when you test them with your scanner, other scanners may not be able to pick up on the different color variations, especially lower end CCD and laser scanners. Yes. However, please save your images in grayscale format to prevent our software from recognizing your images as being formatted for color. Distortion can occur if your B&W images are saved in RGB or CMYK formats, which are formats designed for color printing. Color distortion to B&W images can also be increased if the images are scans that have not been converted to grayscale format.

PostScript printers (which all of ours are) simulate color with shades of gray when color output is not possible. The results are usually reasonable, but if color is essential to understanding, such as in distinguishing various lines in a graph, the output may be less useful than you would like.

Yes you can, although the recommended set up would be to have one printer dedicated to colour printing (using a colour inkset) and one printer dedicated to monochrome (black & white) printing (using a black & white inkset). However, for many individuals, having two printers is not an option due to lack of space or budget. In this case, the best option is to go for the Epson 2100 using PhotoChrome Inks. These produce a good colour range and excellent blacks.

If you have access to a graphics program such as Corel PhotoPaint, or Adobe Photoshop, you can easily import the logo into the program, and convert the image to "Greyscale". If this does not work well, you can alternatively, use the CorelDraw files we sent you, and change the colors of the logo to shades of grey to suit your needs. Please note that if your logo has too many colors, or uses some type of texture or pattern in the logo, it may not be possible to get a "clean" black and white image.

Printing presses and other related equipment cost the same no matter where you go and must be maintained the same way worldwide. On many software packages (e.g. PowerPoint), the default print driver settings are to convert to B&W or greyscale when printing. Look for the setting under "File, Print" or wherever your print driver settings live. Squid is an Epson Color Stylus 3000 wide-format ink jet printer. It's in the confocal lab in Bassine. Squid is not a postscript printer (despite the sticker on the printer).
