When Fox released the movie on video, rather than working from the original mono soundtrack, they decided to use the stereo release of the music soundtrack. Since the DVD and the 25th anniversary video release don't include this imperfect stereo mix, but instead a newly remixed 5.1 soundtrack, we can probably kiss it goodbye. We can only hope Fox will strike some new prints with the new remixed 5.1 soundtrack, which was mixed from the original mono stems.

Although it's possible to have the surround mix automatically downmixed to stereo either via SMART Content or by selection of the downmix parameters on the Dolby AC-3 encoder, the results are often unpredictable and many times unsatisfactory. It's probably best to prepare a separate dedicated stereo mix if there's remaining storage capacity on the delivery medium.

Surround sound systems require a number of additional speakers arranged around the room. Discs are formatted so that different speakers play different sounds from a variety of sound “channels” resulting in a surround effect. Those without multiple speaker sound systems shouldn’t have a problem playing any encoded discs, although the benefits will not necessarily be apparent without the correct equipment.

Creating a mono signal is often necessary when you are powering a subwoofer by bridging the amplifier. Many people do not realize that bridging an amplifier does not always provide a mono signal - many amplifiers will simply use only one input channel, which means that the subwoofer won't be receiving the full signal. Some amplifiers have a switch that will allow you to combine the left and right channels into a mono signal.

This is done either by holding on a channel's 'select' button while pressing the 'select' button for the adjacent channel, or by 'clicking' on the heart icon in the software for one of the desired channels. Hold down Option [Ctrl] before clicking on the insert slot. The slot has to be 'empty' when you do this. Now on stereo tracks, you should get the m/m and m/s plug-ins, and on mono tracks, you should get the s/s plugins.

Jonathan, Source Channel Mapping must be done before you use any portion of the clip in the project. Once the clip is placed on any timeline all options in Source Channel Mapping are greyed out. So using Source Channel Mapping is the very first thing you have to do before using the clip in your edits . Source Channel Mapping is indeed a very powerful feature and very useful one. When you bring your clip down to the timeline there will be: Video+Mono Left+Mono Right.

Here's how to use your ACID software to create a 5.1 Surround Mix that you can upload at ACIDplanet.com. Select Properties from the File menu. On the Audio tab, select 5.1 Surround from the Master Bus Mode menu. This will allow you to mix in 5.1 Surround. When you've finished creating your 5.1 Surround mix, choose Render As from the File menu to display the Render As dialog.

Support for ISAM tables was removed in MySQL 5.0 and you should now use the MyISAM storage engine in place of ISAM. To convert a table tblname from ISAM to MyISAM, simply issue a statement such as this one: ALTER TABLE tblname ENGINE=MYISAM; Internal RAID for MyISAM tables was also removed in MySQL 5.0. First insure that the amplifier is switched off then set both cabs to Mono (Fig. 11.1) and connect a speaker cable to either of the TSL's Parallel loudspeaker outputs (Fig. 11.2). Connect the other end of the speaker cable to the first Cabinet's 16 Ohm input socket (Fig. 11.3). You will nott hurt our stereo intercoms (PM3000) or audio panels when you use a mono (1-channel) headset. The mono headset WILL ground out the left side of the audio. In the pilot or copilot positions, nobody will notice. Audio will be present in both ears. In any passenger position, plugging a mono headset will force any other stereo headset to become mono, too. Those stereo headsets will only her in one ear, unless they switch to the mono mode.

Yes. The [L+R] switches on the stereo aux master modules can be used to make the stereo aux sends mono. When an [L+R] switch is on, the corresponding left and right signals from the stereo aux buses are summed together on the group/aux master module. Note that the same signal will be fed to both the left and right stereo aux insert outputs, and you must connect the return signal to both the left and right insert inputs.

Because the group/aux master's or mono master's matrix pan control is panned either hard left or hard right. It's best to set this pan control to center when using a stereo matrix in Mono mode so that the same signal is fed to both the left and right.

Split: This is used to separate, or 'Split' the channels of a stereo recording into two mono sound files, containing the left and right channels of the original file. This is especially useful when you want to work with only one channel of a stereo recording. Unite: This is used to combine, or 'Unite', two mono files in to one stereo file.

Joint-Stereo - This method of encoding combines duplicate (or "perceptually similar") information from the Right and Left channels in an effort to most efficiently compress the file. This way the duplicate information is only encoded *once* instead of twice (one time for each channel) and allows for more bits to be allocated to the other non-duplicate information.

The ability to monitor in mono is important when multi-track recording. When recording with one input, the ability to hear that input in both ears in the headphones makes monitoring less fatiguing. Monitoring in mono is necessary with single channel sources. The Mono function can be heard only through the headphones, and only affects the input signals; any signals from the PC stay stereo.

Alternate versions of this appear on the Eno vocal box and the "Ali Click" CD5 release. The "Ali Click" version is extended with additional guitar soloing by Fripp. The version on the box set was the version from My Squelchy Life. It sounds like the tempo may be slightly different too, but the recordings appear to be the same. Here's a little trick that will give any standard console the ability to do surround panning as long as you have at least 4 busses available. Although the following is a bit easier to visualize on a English-style split monitor desk, it can be performed on an in-line console just the same. In the stereo world we're used to panning from left to right using a left and right stereo mix buss or odd/even recording busses.

Firstly, confirm that your digital connection (optical or coaxial) is securely made between your DVD player and 5.1 channel receiver. The Dolby Digital 5.1 signal is only transmitted out from the digital outputs on the back of the DVD player as shown below. You will not receive the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal if you are using a standard stereo RCA cable connected to the analog audio outputs on the back of the DVD player as shown below.
