There is a huge variety of styles and content in among Independent filmmakers. We try to provide the widest variety of both that we can access each year. We have shown animations, spoofs on Hollywood films, comedies, dramas, "art" films, including poetry readings. And, we have shown many documentary films about the lives of individuals, about trends in the GLBT community, and about the political world as it affects the GLBT community.

GLBT rights are not special rights. PFLAG works to achieve equal civil rights for all people, including our GLBT loved ones. Our GLBT children, friends and family members deserve the same rights as our straight ones.

There have been people in all cultures and times throughout human history who have identified themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT). Homosexuality is not an illness or a disorder, a fact that is agreed upon by both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association. Homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association in 1974.

Some people say that they have "felt different" or knew they were attracted to people of the same sex from the time they were very young. Some transgender people talk about feeling from an early age that their gender identity did not match parental and social expectations. Others do not figure out their sexual orientation or gender identity until they are adolescents or adults.

The general consensus in Psychology and Medicine is that genetic factors probably do play some role in determining sexual orientation. This genetic background is then accompanied by environmental factors such as the culture you grow up in, your parents’ education and beliefs, your religion, whether you meet gay friends in your youth, etc. etc. etc.—factors that shape this (perhaps only somewhat) predetermined orientation, either smothering it or letting it unfold.

Connections between purple and ancient gay stories and traditions indicate that lavender has considerably more significance than the mixture of “female red” and “male blue” colors. Purple represents, brings about, and is present during radical transformation from one state of being to another.

Mainstream society often makes no distinction between lesbian, gay, bi and transgender people, and lumps all into one large "queer" category, so trying to gain larger acceptance with a bi label is not, in reality, very effective. Also, identifying as bi can be controversial in gay and lesbian circles, rather than an asset. People who identify as bisexual are being honest in refusing to bow to pressure to identify as either straight or gay.

The sexual orientation of transgender people covers the entire spectrum. At some level, it can also be largely irrelevant, but if labels are to be applied, all of them can. Some FTM (female-to-male transgender) men are attracted to woman, others to men. In the first instance, they would most likely identify as a heterosexual man, in the latter, as a gay man.

The Kinsey Institute suggested that approximately 10 percent of the population may be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. This would equal approximately 28 million (per the U.S. 2000 census). However, the basis for the percentage is greatly disputed. Gay men, lesbians, and bisexual people are found in all walks of life, among all racial/ethnic groups, and at all socioeconomic levels. In addition, the number of transgender people is greatly disputed and largely unknown.

All people, including our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender loved ones deserve love, support and full acceptance in society. Because the LBGTQ community still faces discrimination in today's society, many of them think they have no choice but to struggle with their sexual orientation alone. The common myths and stereotypes of gay people do not help. When someone comes out, they are taking a risk.

We treat everyone with the same dignity and respect they deserve without making an issue out of ones preferences or physical stats. We also expect to be treated with respect and courtesy by you. Estimates cited by the Human Rights Campaign are that about 5% of the population are gay men, and about 2-3% lesbians. Bisexuals, transgendered and intersex make up a smaller population.
