If your dog has tested positive for Heartworms , for your dog's health and well being, prompt veterinary treatment is vital. If your dog is 6 months or older we recommend an occult blood test to detect the presence of adult heartworms. This is performed in our office with a small sample of your dogs blood. We can have the results in approximately 8 minutes.

They are transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. A mosquito becomes infected with micofilariae (heartworm larvae) when it takes a blood meal from an infected dog. When the mosquito feeds again the larvae enter the dogs body through the bite wound. These larvae eventually travel to the heart where they develop into adult heartworms. Once they reach the heart they can cause heart failure, liver and kidney disease, or even death.

Once your dog tests negative for heartworms, we recommend putting all dogs on a once a month preventative to prevent them from acquiring heartworms, the preventative usually comes in tablet form. Once your dog is on the preventative year round, we recommend retesting every 2 years.

Heartworm disease is a very serious and often fatal condition if left untreated. The best way to protect your dog is to keep them on a reliable heartworm preventative year round for the rest of their life. Heartworms can only be spread from dog to dog by the bite of a mosquito. When a mosquito bites a dog with heartworms it takes in some of the immature microscopic heartworms.

The heartworm reproductive cycle is a marvel of ingenuity. Since they reside entirely within the circulatory system, they cannot pass eggs to the outside, as do many of the intestinal parasites. Therefore, the female heartworm (yes, two sexes!)lay microscopic juvenile worms, or larvae. These are called microfilaria. The microfilaria float in the bloodstream. When the dog is bitten by a mosquito, the microfilaria are drawn into the insect.

Heartworm infections do not go directly from one dog to another. However, if a dog has Heartworm infection, and a mosquito bites that dog, the mosquito can pick up the Heartworm microfilariae, which it can transmit to other pets.

Heartworm disease can be prevented. According to the American Heartworm Society, heartworm prevention is safe, easy and inexpensive compared to treating a dog after worms have matured into adults. USADA handles all aspects of the disciplinary process if a sample tests positive either domestically or internationally.
