Work done by students on UROP grants is not covered by the usual lab access fee. A research account must be set up and lab fee of $64.25 must be paid if the lab access is required for the research work. The UROP grant should cover these fees. Contact labmanager for more information.

UROP stands for "Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program." It is a great way to gain research experience with a graduate student/professor. There are many UROPs available to undergraduates, even as freshmen. It is very easy to obtain a UROP. UROPs are one of many things unique to MIT (there are similar programs at other colleges but most of them hardly come close). You can look online or around campus for advertised UROPs, or go and bug a professor whose research interests you.

All GVU and SciVis users are able to use the Video Lab. First time Video Lab users should schedule an appointment with one of the GVU Lab Managers in CCB 210 before accessing the equipment. SciVis users should schedule the appointment with one of the SciVis Lab GRAs. Experienced Video Lab users can use the equipment without scheduling assistance. The Video Lab door key is not available for check-out, so ask one of the GVU Lab Managers for unmonitored access.

All GVU users are able to use the Video Lab, however only for Usability experiments. The Usability Lab is available 24 hours a day to those with the secret door combination. The secret Usability Lab door combination code can be obtained from any of the people listed in FAQ question #4. Refer to the next FAQ question for informatin about scheduling the Usability Lab.

To access your e-mail from any computer lab (or anywhere else for that matter) simply visit http://webmail.ups.edu. There, you can log in using your e-mail login name and password to send and receive e-mail from anywhere.

To gain basic internet / email access for the entire summer (Pre-Session, Summer Session I, and Summer Session II) students who are not registered for summer courses will be required to pay a $30 fee. Students who are registered for summer courses will be assessed a per credit fee on their fee statement and will retain access for the entire summer. Faculty and TAs who teach a course that meets in one of the Full Access computer labs may use that lab without charge to test software features and to prepare for class lessons and exercises. When new software is installed (usually between semesters), the faculty members who will be using the software will be invited to the labs to test it.

Faculty can obtain accounts and folders to put up materials on the lab servers for their classes. Faculty do not have access to the software on the lab server from their office accounts (please contact labmanager for more information).

Yes. Work always takes priority when using the lab computer, but there will be times for personal e-mail and internet use. Internet use is limited.

All registered students at SIPA have access to the SIPA labs. Anyone taking a SIPA course can get an account by paying the lab fee of $150 per semester.

Yes, though remember that your connection will typically be slower than that of a hard-wired connection. Also, applications installed on the lab computers are generally not available to be installed on your own personal laptop unless they are part of the student software bundle.

The Open Computer Lab is designed for students who need to use Word and other Microsoft Office programs and classroom software. It is located in Bladen Hall, Room 104. The Open Computer Lab operates Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 10:00 pm; Friday 8 am – 5 pm; Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. During Intersession (mini-semester between semesters) the lab is open Monday through Friday only, 8 am – 4:30 pm.

No. While students commence their placement during either the winter or summer vacation periods and can work during subsequent vacation periods, UROP continues during the academic semester. Students who complete their degrees at the end of the academic year are not be eligible to apply for the December intake.

During semester the recommended commitment is approximately 8 hours a week, arranged around the students university timetable. During the university recess periods, UROP students usually work full-time for at least some of the vacation. Students are not expected to work during swot-vac and exam periods.

UROP was conceived because it was recognised that students often need to work part-time to support themselves throughout their studies. UROP Students are therefore paid as casual employees. As long as the time commitments of UROP can be met, students may hold another part-time job. However, it is a condition of the UROP placement that the student's academic standards be maintained.
