There is no one symbol that is best. We, in fact, have two distinct symbols. Plus, there are countless other "combination" symbols that show a cigarette along with other prohibited activities (i.e. no smoking plus no drinking plus no eating . . . . .). Also note that we use one of the symbols without the traditional red circle and cross mark to show that smoking is allowed in a certain area.

In some schemes, color is important. A line, for a feature that has length but is too narrow to show as an area, typically roads and rivers.
