Yes, but as of to date, it's not possible to boot windows from a FireWire or USB drive. It is possible to assign a drive letter to the backup drive with the disk management tool and then copy the data off of that drive should your system drive die. We backup to any drive that is not listed as removable. To the best of our knowledge, USB drives do not show up as removable.

WinRescue will back up to an external harddrive as long as it is listed in Windows Explorer as a regular harddrive. WinRescue backs up files and not a harddrive image. So, the harddrive's boot information is not backed up. Making a Boot Disk in WinRescue (95/98/ME) will save the boot information on a diskette.

Most external drives you purchase are formatted for PCs. If you are only going to use it with your Mac then you should reformat the drive by using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Regarding your particular question, basically we do not recommend to backup you're the entire drive using GrandBackup because it doesn't do sector copy of the disk, just data copy. In most cases the files that you need to back up are your data files. If you lose the hard disk, you can install the program files and other software from the original CDs or diskettes but your data files are the most valuable material and they need to be restored from your own backups.
