Can I use an external FireWire or USB/USB2 drive as my backup drive?

SystemGuardian XC/2000 Technical FAQ - DuoCor Technical Supp...
Yes, but as of to date, it's not possible to boot windows from a FireWire or USB drive. It is possible to assign a drive letter to the backup drive with the disk management tool and then copy the data off of that drive should your system drive die. We backup to any drive that is not listed as removable. To the best of our knowledge, USB drives do not show up as removable.

Can I use WinRescue to backup my IDE hard drive to an external FireWire hard drive?

winrescue 95/98/me Faq
WinRescue will back up to an external harddrive as long as it is listed in Windows Explorer as a regular harddrive. WinRescue backs up files and not a harddrive image. So, the harddrive's boot information is not backed up. Making a Boot Disk in WinRescue (95/98/ME) will save the boot information on a diskette.

I backup to an external hard drive. How do I format the drive?

ChronoSync | Index of Frequently Asked ChronoSync Questions ...
Most external drives you purchase are formatted for PCs. If you are only going to use it with your Mac then you should reformat the drive by using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". If you are gong to use it with your Mac and a PC then use "MS-DOS file system" format. To format or reformat a drive you will have to erase it. So before you erase the drive, copy your files to another drive.

Can I use FireStore with any FireWire (IEEE-1394) drive?

Focus Enhancements
Yes. You can use FireStore with virtually any DV (read/write) capable FireWire hard disk drive. As a rule of thumb, the drive should be capable of reading/writing at least 7MB/s and relatively fast access time (at most 10-12 milliseconds). The drive MUST be first partitioned as a FAT32 volume to work with FireStore (even if you intend to use the drive on a Macintosh or other computer system later).

WHAT IF WE ALREADY HAVE A ZIP, JAZ, CDR/W OR AN EXTERNAL USB/FIREWIRE (IEEE1394) HARD DRIVE?

Offsite Backup - Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ - critical...
Frankly, we believe that these media are not optimal for most users and that they should not use a zip or other removable disk media for backup. An offsite backup service is completely automated and has the required file redundancy to protect important data. The only safe way to use removable disk media for backup is to have three disks and make the same backup three times.

Is it possible to install Windows onto an external FireWire or USB drive?

Users/FAQ - OnMac.net Wiki
Due to limitations of the Windows boot process it is not possible to boot Windows from an external Firewire or USB drive. It is possible to boot Linux from USB like live-CDs (eg. Knoppix) but if you do a search of this topic on the web you will find that this is not the case for Windows although some limited WinPE applications (e.g. Winternals ERD Commander) do boot from a CD.

Can I use FireStore with FireWire (IEEE-1394) drive kits?

Focus Enhancements
Yes. FireStore will work with IEEE-1394 drive kits that put an IEEE-1394 interface on standard IDE disk drives. It is however necessary to ensure that the selected disk drive is capable of reading/writing DV streams in real time. Generally, that would mean a disk drive that is capable of read/write of at least 7MB/s and access times no greater than 10-12 milliseconds).

Can I use GrandBackup to backup my entire main hard drive to a backup hard drive?

ObjectRescue.com | Products | GrandBackup Personal | FAQ
Regarding your particular question, basically we do not recommend to backup you're the entire drive using GrandBackup because it doesn't do sector copy of the disk, just data copy. In most cases the files that you need to back up are your data files. If you lose the hard disk, you can install the program files and other software from the original CDs or diskettes but your data files are the most valuable material and they need to be restored from your own backups.

Why don’t I just use an external hard drive to store my music?

Welcome to iDoubleDrive!
Many people do. But when the hard drive fails, (and it will – hard drives have a life expectancy of less than three years) your music, and all the effort in digitizing, is lost. What makes iDoubleDrive special is that it backs up your external hard drive in real time to a second hard drive. This makes iDoubleDrive a completely redundant system, and the perfect place to store all your important files.
