HIVdent Patient Education: Infant Care
Although each baby is different, most babies begin teething between six and eight months after birth. The first teeth to appear are typically the two lower front teeth (central incisors) followed by the two upper front teeth. The complete set of 20 primary teeth should occur by the age of three. If your baby is feeling some discomfort, use a teething gel, to help ease the pain. Or give your baby a very cold or frozen teething ring.

Can orthodontic treatment begin even if there are baby teeth present?

Palos Heights, IL (Illinois) Orthodontist Michael P. Meehan
Yes. Some orthodontic problems are significant enough to require early intervention. This is called Phase One or early treatment. If Dr. Meehan considers the problem not severe enough to warrant an early intervention, we will place your child in our recall system. Our recall or observation system sends out appointment reminders every 6-12 months. This allows the doctor to closely monitor your child's dental development. There is no charge for these recall visits.

Why is treatment necessary for baby teeth?

FAQs - Dental
Baby or primary teeth are just as important as permanent teeth. Some primary teeth may remain in your child's mouth until he or she is twelve years old. Besides contributing to efficient chewing, clear speech and pleasant appearance, primary teeth also help guide the erupting permanent teeth into proper position. If a primary tooth is lost prematurely, adjacent teeth may tilt or drift from their original position. This will prevent the normal eruption of underlying permanent teeth.

Will my baby inherit my bad teeth?

FAQ's
There are many factors which influence the susceptibility of teeth to decay. Some of these factors may be inherited (shape of teeth), others may be influenced by environment (fluoride) or behaviour (brushing). Clean teeth do not decay. Although some people are more immune to decay than others, with good dental care cavities can be prevented. If you have a lot of fillings or even dentures your child can still grow up with healthy teeth.

There are a variety of reasons to have orthodontics. And all of them are positive! Orthodontics makes the teeth easier to clean because they are straight. Also, straight teeth allow for a greater volume of bone between the roots of the teeth, which means a greater defense to periodontal disease. And of course more self-confidence, self esteem and the success that comes with having straight teeth and a dynamite smile.

Should I get teeth extracted as part of my orthodontic treatment?

Braces FAQ Frequently Asked Questions: Thinking about gettin...
It depends on your specific case. When we are young and our jaws are still growing, dentists/orthodontists can work with our growth to straighten the teeth without extraction. But once we are adults, dentists are limited to what is already in place. If your orthodontist recommends extraction, it may be wise to get at least one more (if not two more) opinions before going through with the procedure -- once the teeth are gone, they're gone! Your teeth and jaw help to shape your face.

Are baby teeth really that important to my child?

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry - Pediatric Oral Hea...
Primary, or "baby," teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt.

Should baby teeth be filled?

DocReed.com
If a primary tooth has a cavity, it can cause the child pain and discomfort. It can also be lost prematurely, which can cause a problem. The primary teeth hold the space in the dental arch for the permanent teeth to erupt, if this space is lost due to premature loss of the primary teeth, the permanent teeth will have no space to erupt and come in crowded. Filling a cavity in a primary tooth permits the tooth to be retained until it is naturally lost.

Why are baby teeth important?

Summit Dental Group ::: Frequently Asked Questions
Your child's baby teeth are very important. Children need strong, healthy teeth to chew their food, talk, and have a good-looking smile. Baby teeth also keep a space in the jaw for the adult teeth. If a baby tooth is lost too early, the teeth beside it may drift into the empty space. When it's time for the adult teeth to come in, there may not be enough room. This can make the adult teeth crooked or crowded, and braces may be necessary to correct the problem.

It is very important to maintain the health of the primary (baby) teeth. Neglected cavities can and frequently do lead to problems which affect developing permanent teeth. Primary teeth are important for (1) proper chewing and eating, (2) providing space for the permanent teeth and guiding them into the correct position, and (3) permitting normal development of the jaw bones and muscles. Primary teeth also affect the development of speech and add to an attractive appearance.

Can orthodontics damage my teeth?

India Dentist - Advanced Dental Care Centre Chandigarh India...
Your teeth can be damaged if they are not properly looked after during treatment. Appliances will not in themselves cause damage, but poor cleaning and too many sugary drinks and snacks can cause permanent damage. Brackets, wires and braces can trap food and cause more plaque than usual to build up. So the teeth and appliance need to be cleaned very thoroughly.
