Cancer can be detected in the early stages by Screening and by seeking prompt medical attention for any worrying symptoms. Screening: refers to examination and investigation of persons without any symptoms or signs suggestive of cancer with a view to detect cases of cancer before they cause symptoms. It is expected that by this approach cancers can be detected at a very early stage and thus lead to a much higher chance of cure.

Majority of patients are free of pain and other symptoms in the early stages. This asymptomatic stage leads to a delay in seeking medical attention and allows disease progression unchecked. There is also a reluctance to entertain and accept this diagnosis even when there are obvious pointers in this direction. As a result, most patients present with advanced disease.

Unfortunately there is no mammogram (breast X-ray) for lung cancer yet. But a new technique called spiral or helical low-dose CT scanning has been successful in detecting early lung cancers in smokers and former smokers. It has not yet been shown whether this test will actually save lives. For one, it often finds abnormalities that require testing and surgery but turn out not to be cancer.

Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by your dentist during a thorough mouth examination. If mouth cancer is recognised early, then the chances of a cure are good. Many people with mouth cancer go to their dentist or doctor too late.

Both breast physical examination and mammography can detect breast cancer. Breast cancer is usually found much earlier by mammography - when it is smaller, less likely to have spread and more likely to respond to treatment. Multiple studies have confirmed that survival rates are better when the cancer is discovered by mammography alone. Very small calcifications may be the first sign of breast cancer and are frequently seen while the cancer is still confined to the milk ducts.

Usually, there are no symptoms. The only way to detect cancer early is take samples (biopsies) from the prostate. However, this is not necessary in everyone. A new test is available and will probably be very useful. This is the PCA3 score. Essentially, PCA3 is a gene found much more in prostate cancer cells than prostate cells without cancer. After examination of the prostate by a finger (DRE), urine is collected and tested for the amount of a product associated with PCA3.

Most early cancers are relatively small and cause few symptoms, so routine screening is not used. When they do cause symptoms, patients often feel as if they have a routine cold or sinus infection. The safest way to detect early cancers is to see your doctor if you have prolonged nasal or sinus symptoms described below.

On the surface this would seem to be a fairly straight forward question, but as there exists the controversy of competing nomenclatures, it is not as simple as one might think. In fact, in the U. S., universal agreement on a standardized staging system does not exist.

Prostate cancer screening should begin at age 50. In men at increased risk, including those with first degree relatives with prostate cancer and men of African American descent, screening should start at age 40.; African American men have the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the world as well as the highest risk of prostate cancer death. As such, early detection is the key element for cure.

Approximately two out of every three men who have a prostate biopsy will not have prostate cancer. There are three main options for treating early prostate cancer: Radiotherapy: this involves a course of radiotherapy treatment on the prostate gland at an outpatient clinic. The aim is to cure, although there are possible side effects. Impotence may be suffered by between two and six out of every 10 men (25-60 per cent).

Hasty start after consulting only one speciality, getting under investigated, leaving treatment midway, undergoing inappropriate surgery, lesser radiation sittings and low dose chemotherapy, can definitely compromise chances of permanent cure. Such hasty start may allow patient and attendants to feel falsely secure and may yield initial temporary cure.

Treatments are available for all women with breast cancer, whatever the stage. Treatments are constantly evolving, so it is important to talk to your doctor about your therapy. There are many options you and your doctor will consider. Sometimes more than one treatment is needed. Surgery is an important part of treatment for many women with breast cancer. Many women can choose between lumpectomy and mastectomy.

Effective interventions are available to treat most cancer-therapy related complications, including medical management, physical therapy or even corrective surgery, depending on the individual situation. Obviously, the earlier a problem is uncovered, the more effective the therapy. Thyroid problems may be seen in those who have had radiation to the head and neck areas, and in those who have received interleukin, interferon or other biological agents.

Most precancerous conditions of the cervix could be detected and treated before cancer develops if all women had pelvic exams and Pap tests regularly. This way, most invasive cancers could be prevented. Any invasive cancer that does occur would likely be found at an early, curable stage.
