Instead of adding more insulation, you should consider adding a radiant barrier system. This will have a greater effect on your cooling bills because it reflects heat away from the attic before it can reach the insulation and ceiling below. Without a radiant barrier, your roof radiates solar-generated heat to the insulation and, if they are mounted in the attic, your air conditioning ducts below it.

A Cooler House installs blown fiberglass and cellulose attic insulation. Honestly both products are good insulators. Cellulose is more dense than fiberglass and therefore is a better barrier for air movement through holes in walls and ceilings.

Either loose fill (typically fiberglass or cellulose) or batt insulation (usually fiberglass) will work well. Batts are easier to install yourself, while many contractors find loose fill easier and less expensive to install.

If you wish, you can insulate the walls of a box cooker with various substances. Fiberglass or Styrofoam is usually not recommended since they give off ill-smelling gases as they heat up. Natural substances such as cotton, wool, feathers, or even crumpled newspapers work well. Many people, however, leave the walls empty of any stuffing, preferring instead to place a piece of foiled cardboard as a baffle inside the wall airspace. This makes a lighter cooker and seems to be adequate.

Increasing the level of insulation from 2-3 inches (R5) to 8 -14 inches (R30) can save $95 to $145 per year for every 1,200 square feet of ceiling area. For rectangular space, measure the length and width to the nearest foot and multiply them together. Length x Width = Area x = If your attic is not rectangular, break it down into rectangles. Find the area of each. Then add the areas together to get the total. Install batts or blankets of insulation between the joists or trusses.

If you have more than 7 inches of insulation, the extra energy savings for adding insulation will usually not cover the cost to add it. Before you insulate, be sure to seal all openings, cracks and crevices where air can escape from your heated space into your attic (see brochure below). Before you start, you can have your home evaluated for air leakage and overall energy efficiency.

Insulation is a very important part of your home's defense against heat intruding into the living area. But in the case of an un-vented, super-heated attic, insulation cannot stop the heat from getting through. Remember that insulation is designed to RESIST heat transfer, not STOP it. The heat will eventually get through. The best solution is to have your insulation SLOW the transfer of heat long enough for your attic vents to remove it.

Look at the insulation without disturbing it. Commercial vermiculate can range in size from very fine particles to large (course) pieces nearly one inch long. Vermiculate attic insulation is a light weight, pebble-like, pour-in or add-on (loose) product and is usually light brown or gold in color. It's texture is often compared to "popcorn"and can often be re-shaped when pressed together with the fingers.

Most homeowners find it easiest to use batt insulation. Always use unfaced batts, as the paper of foil vapor retarder can trap water vapor in the original insulation, causing moisture problems. If possible, install the new insulation perpendicular to the attic floor joists to reduce heat loss through the joists. Loose fiberglass or cellulose can also be used, by pouring it and leveling it with a board or other implement.

Seal up the largest air leaks in your house--the ones that whistle on windy days, or feel drafty. The worst culprits are usually not windows and doors, but utility cut-throughs for pipes ("plumping penetrations"), gaps around chimneys and recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets. Better yet, hire an energy auditor with a blower door to point out where the worst cracks are.

Yes in most cases you can. It is not recommend if your insulation is contaminated by vermin, moist, or mildewed.

While the Ontario Building Code does prescribe minimum insulation values, upgrading or exceeding these minimum values does not require inspections by the municipality.

Regardless of how much insulation you have in your attic, adding RB will save on your heating and cooling expense, and keep you much more comfortable. Energy savings for heating and cooling can vary from 17% to 25% depending on a number of factors, including climate, building configuration, materials used, site, family size and lifestyle. Your RB dealer has been trained to evaluate your home or business and advise you of your savings potential.

Placing the radiant barrier material directly on top of the attic insulation is not recommended. This type of installation allows dust to accumulate on the foil surface facing the roof. In time, the accumulated dust will negate the radiant barriers' reflective effect. If this type of installation technique is performed, it is strongly recommended that a perforated product be used in this type of application. If not, problems could develop with mold due to condensation.

radiant barriers perform a function that is similar to that of conventional insulation, in that they reduce the amount of heat that is transferred from the attic into the house. they differ in the way they reduce the heat flow. a radiant barrier reduces the amount of heat radiated across an air space that is adjacent to the radiant barrier. the primary function of conventional insulation is to trap still air within the insulation, and hence reduce heat transfer by air movement (convection).

The most important aspect of keeping a dome warm and cozy is an efficient heat source. If you are in an unusually cold environment, we recommend using the Reflectix, Liner, or Thermoshield. Thermoshield can be applied to both the inside and outside of the dome for maximum winter and summer insulation.

It will depend on the situation. By and large, for lofts we recommend cellulose fibre, made from recycled fireproofed newsprint. Warmcel, made from recycled newspaper, is available from us by mail order. Another environmentally-friendly option is Sheep's Wool. Standard insulation material is used. The most common choices are fiberglass or rigid foam. Timberline's 2" x 6" framing members allow for 5 1/2" of insulation, sufficient for most climatic conditions. Other options include spray-in expanding foam which is very effective. Back to Top

Three kinds of insulation are currently available depending on the intended use: expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene and polyisocyanurate. The insulation comes to the site pre-cut in 6” wide strips to be slid into the Octaform™ system. Each strip has pre-cut edge slots to slide into place.

It depends. Be leery of any energy management contractor who uses only one type of attic venting system. Each home is unique. Ideally, solar powered vents are recommended for removing heat and moisture from the attic. Another method is to use an electrically powered attic vent. We also use 14" turbines, sometimes called "whirly birds," to vent small attic areas or garages.

Hiking footwear with good heel support is best. All leather is not necessary. Socks are important; there are new blends that dry quickly and cushion well. All cotton is not recommended. Whatever hiking boot or shoe you wear, make sure it's broken in before you begin the Trail.

Ideally, you want to use a dark, light-weight, shallow pot that is slightly larger than the food you will cook in it. Metal pans seem to cook best. Hardware stores in the US usually carry dark, speckled, metal pans called Graniteware. Shiny aluminum pots--so common in developing countries--can be painted black or can be blackened in a fire. Cast iron pots will work, but extra solar energy is used to heat up the pot as well as the food, so they will not work in marginal conditions.

There are a couple of basic styles of pull-buoy. It is strictly a matter of personal preference as to which style you should buy. The traditional style is two cylinders of foam with an adjustable cord fastening them together. This style can be adjusted to place the buoys closer together if desired. This adjustment can help keep the buoy from slipping out of place on flipturns. A newer style is a single piece of sculpted foam.

A multipurpose fire extinguisher is best for the home. Look for the rating to be at least 2A:10B,C on the label. This extinguisher can be used on any type of fire commonly found in the home. It will often be labeled A-B-C.
