CAT Scan is a commonly used term that refers to Computed Axial Tomography. CAT or CT Scanning was developed after Ultrasound and uses x-ray technology. CAT Scanning is fast, patient friendly and has the unique ability to image a combination of soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels. It is a multi use imaging system. For many computed tomography examinations, patients may be asked to take a special contrast agent (orally, rectally or via injection).

X-ray is electromagnetic radiation capable of penetrating solids, used to photograph and examine parts of the body, and the X signifies their unknown nature. Ultrasound is sound with a frequency greater than 20,000 Hz, approximately the upper limit of human hearing. It is used to photograph and examine parts of the body. A CAT Scan, or C (Computerized) A (Axial) T (Tomography), uses a scanner x-ray machine to take a cross section x-ray image of the body. It is also called a CT scan.

One of the most basic differences between the two tests is that CAT Scanning uses x-rays and MRI does not. In most situations, MRI is superior to CAT in the demonstration of soft tissue pathology. Your doctor can best advise which test would be most appropriate for you.

These costly, sophisticated machines require specialists who will perform the tests and interpret the results. Should your clinician recommend these tests, you will be referred to an outside agency.

It sounds like your family doctor wants to check for kidney stones. To do this a CAT (CT) scan is done typically without any oral or intravenous contrast material. The CT is done with thin sections through the kidneys, ureters (the tubes from the kidneys to the bladder) and the bladder to look for any stones (calculi) that may be causing any blockages and thereby flank pain.

A PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan is a procedure in which a small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) is injected into a vein, and a scanner is used to make detailed, computerized pictures of areas inside the body where the glucose is used. PET scans show the difference between healthy and abnormally functioning tissues and can illuminate the changes in a brain that has memory impairment.

A DEXA scan is a test that a doctor orders to see how strong your bones are. It checks for Osteoporosis. It is painless and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Anyone over 18 years old can have a scan (there are no standards set for children under 18). You build bone density until approximately 25-30 years of age. Yes. CIT conducts scans to check for vulnerabilities throughout the year. As part of the ResNet subscription process, CIT will conduct a high-risk vulnerability scan. This is a brief scan which checks only for a few highly-exploitable vulnerabilities. Later in the year, CIT may conduct one or more additional scans which will check for a wider range of vulnerabilities. Please note that you should not rely on these scans as a means of identifying whether or not your system is secure.

Most surgeons would say a CT is not necessary; however, I like to have a CT before surgery to ensure that no other important medical conditions are present that might affect the planned operation.

The technology used at YourScan is actually a CAT scan. We do not use any contrast, it is a dry scan done as a screening or preventative measure. YourScan is staffed by radiologists from Anne Arundel Medical Center and the radiologists rotate here on a schedule. All you have to do is lie on your back and hold your breath for a few seconds. The machine will move you through a large open ring in which hundreds of high resolution images of your body will be gathered. The entire examination is comfortable and will only take a few minutes.

Frequency will vary from case to case, depending on what an initial scan uncovers. For those with multiple risk factors, or troublesome findings, a follow-up scan may be repeated in a year's time to assess the success of lifestyle changes or medication in treating the problem. For those receiving a clean bill of health with an initial scan we recommend a recheck in perhaps two to three years. No diagnostic test is infallible.
