Yes. In fact, all TV majors are required to serve an internship in the industry so that they will have some real world experience before they graduate. The good news is that many of our interns are offered jobs as a result of their work at these internships. That is why it is best to do your internship during your last semester on campus..

About a third of our graduates go into the commercial broadcasting aspect of the industry working as producers, writers, directors, editors, technicians, and unit managers for motion picture studios, TV networks, production companies, and TV stations (see TV Alumni and TV Graduates in Industry).

Currently, the School of Film and Television has around 900 students, with 700 of those being undergraduates and 200 graduates. The majority of students, both undergraduate and graduate, are pursuing film production.

You will first need to determine which area of the industry interests you most. There are lots of luscious babes on the screen in movies and TV, but those are about the only women to be found in the entertainment industry. Behind the scenes there are a few tokens, but nowhere enough cinematographers, screenwriters, directors, camera operators, etc., who are female and of color. We believe that any mass art form that discriminates to that degree should take a long, hard look at itself.

Actors trained for performance in the theatre can easily adapt to the needs of either film or television; it is not always easy for film and television actors to learn how to perform for a live audience. Television offers a precedent for achieving success with animation. Cartoon Network's Adult Swim ranks #1 with adults 18-34 and regularly outperforms the late night talk shows. Even more impressive is that their audience continues to grow. We feel that this is good base from which to work and makes the risk of our ambitions a much more calculated one. All that said, if we were offered the opportunity to make an Ether film, we would take it under careful consideration.

Yes. A Deputy Intern may be promoted to the next higher level if they meet all the agency qualifications and eligibility requirements necessary for promotion and have successfully completed applicable training requirements.

All though the emphasis of our program is on live entertainment, we are aware that many of our graduates find work in the film and TV field. The skills learned in the Stagecraft Program are easily transferable to many other fields. Courses offered include: Introduction to Film Studies, and Canadian Film Studies, and Stagecraft for Film and TV.

Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries, offers advice on working in broadcast, film, video, interactive media and photo imaging. This is not a realistic expectation. That does not mean that students have never gotten on a film set through the LA Program. They have. But, it’s usually a combination of luck and timing. Film productions do not necessarily correspond with the semester system. Many films are shot on location, not in LA. And as an intern, you are not an employee and therefore not bonded, insured, or a member of a union. That makes it pretty tough to get on a film set.

Get involved and gain experience! Independent and student projects are often looking for volunteers. Contact the Centre for Arts and Technology (Okanagan) at 250-860-2787 or the Okanagan Society of Independent Filmmaking at 250-769-1603. Make contacts by attending film-related events and/or join the organizations that host such events. Classes and workshops also offer the technical training that may be necessary in film and video production.

The number of departments in the film industry is vast. You need to first identify which area you would most like to work in so that you can specifically target that area and customize your portfolio submission to that department. Start off small. If you can't get onto a great job immediately, start on smaller projects. Find young filmmakers in your area and team up with them. Offer to work for free. Put an ad in the local paper.

Keeping things simple. When you're working with crews of people, things get complicated quickly. Often you end up taking orders from multiple people—all of whom are ambitious individuals with their own opinions about how things should be running. Know who you should be taking orders from, be able to communicate well, and follow directions.

It may well be that clerical work will be part of your internship, but a lot depends on the organization that hires you, as well as on your personal skills. Be sure that your resume mentions your specific skills, experience, and interests. For example, fluency in the language of the country will give you a better chance to get involved in the kind of work that is usually done only by local personnel.

Yes and no. Yes, you can work after internship hours are over (evening and weekends). No, you cannot get paid for the hours you spend as an intern. The rule is that you may not replace a full time employee while training as an intern. If you were to be working for your facility while at the same time learning as an intern there would be a conflict of purposes.

There is no definite answer to this - it depends on where you work, what that workplace will allow you to do as an intern, and how you will balance your work hours with your required internship hours. Thus, this situation is handled on an individual basis.

Interns who will be handling confidential or sensitive information should be carefully briefed by their agency supervisor on this aspect of their work and told how to handle it. Many government agencies require students to obtain a security clearance. TWC can help facilitate the security clearance process, but cannot conduct security clearances.

Part of the learning experience for students is to interact with other professionals in the workplace. Understanding office protocol and the manager-employee relationship is a crucial part of experiential education. There may be some circumstances where it makes sense for students to spend some time working from home however; working from home on a consistent basis does not achieve the mission of the program.

Your schedule will depend on your employer and the internship that you do. Some formal internship programs offer 40 hour per week opportunities. Students who intern while taking classes usually work between 10-20 hours per week. Some local opportunities in the Austin area require students to work as few as 4 hours per week. Most employers are flexible when it comes to setting your work schedule because they know that classes come first.
