It depends upon your expectations. There are some outstanding replacement speakers out there that can come very close to a true component set. But they are not going to give the same level of performance as a true component set when properly installed. Bottom line; If you want the BEST quality of sound possible, you want components. If you aren't sure; You guessed it! Listen and decide!

component speakers have advantages in a few different areas, the main one being flexibility. because component speakers (sometimes called separates) can actually have the tweeter and mid separated, you can have them located in areas that will work best for show, sound stage, or imaging purposes in your particular install. in general, component speakers can handle more power.

Component speakers, also call separates, are a separate midrange and tweeter. The midrange can be mounted in the factory opening and the tweeter up higher on the door or dashboard. Component speakers are typically better sounding because the audio signal is split up so that the midrange frequencies are routed to the midrange speaker and the high frequencies are sent to the tweeter via a crossover. This allows each speaker to play the frequencies they were designed for.

Think about a concert, opera or other similar performance; you don't sit with your back to the band or performance do you? the subwoofer is a 5x7". the rear seat speakers fit an oversized 6 1/2". the doors are 4". and the dash tweeters are small (around 1"). you can modify the door speaker enclosures to fit some 6 1/2" speakers. list members have had good luck with mb quart speakers, using 218.03cX separates up front and qm 160.03 kx coaxials in the rear. rather than replacing the 5x7" stock sub, some listers remove the spare tire and put sub boxes in its space.

You need to take a few things into account here, the wattage of the existing amp and the total wattage of the existing speakers. As long as the amp wattage stays above the total speaker wattage after the additional speakers, there is no need to upgrade. Of course the other thing is weather the new speakers are to be zoned separately and if there is that availability on the existing amp.
