While not guaranteed, it may be possible to use the network from outside the buildings with wireless, but it will depend on your proximity to the buildings and your computer’s wireless network card reception capabilities.

Currently there is no support for coverage outside or between buildings. There is, however, signal "bleed-over" from buildings in some areas on campus. The signal is usable, but not supported.

Probably. Any wireless receiver supporting the industry standard 802.11b or 802.11g protocols should work. However, in rare cases, we have found wireless receivers which had compatibility issues with the computer upon which it was installed.

Camping is allowed outside of designated campgrounds in some areas on the Inyo National Forest. In areas designated as "Developed Recreation Areas," camping is restricted to developed campgrounds only.

There is wireless access in the Library, College Hall, Wister Hall, Holroyd, Union (food court area only), and Olney Hall, St. Basil Court and Treetops.

Yes, we do offer service coverage outside or in your home. The Wireless Mobile Network is Mesh-based, not cellular; therefore the service is intended to be used from within specific physical area. In some cases, coverage will spill out into a small area surrounding a service location, but that is not by design. Although the Wireless Mobile Network service would be available, the Wi-Fi 802.

The study/computer room is designated a quiet area 24 hours per day (although people do talk some and wander in and out as it is a public space). Some members even study out in the commons, even though it tends to be a busy area. Also, when the weather is nice many people study outside in the courtyard or on the deck. No, of course not! Members of Laurel House do tend to study a lot but certainly not all of the time.

Recently the wireless network was upgraded in all buildings on campus, except for MSB and WSW. In these buildings the wireless network has a different name. Instead of UMF_BASIC, it is still called "80211net". If you set the wireless up when you first used it in a building with a different network name than the building you are currently in, you may have to double click on your wireless icon and manually set up the network with the other network name. with all things wireless, the site needs to be considered first. Other factors such as distance and any obvious obstacles such as hills, buildings, trees, etc. should be taken into account. AIMS requires a permanent connection to the database. If the connection is intermittent, as is often the case with wireless networks, crashes and data loss may occur because AIMS tries to read some data and cannot connect to the database. These intermittent connections can cause Access databases to become corrupt if the connection is broken while data is being written to the database, because all the writing is done by the client machines (the user's computer).

Yes. Guests should enter their e-mail address in the guest login box to connect to the Wesleyan wireless network. Guests have only HTTP and HTTPS access to the Internet and Wesleyan servers that are accessible by the general public. discussed above, applications that require a lot of bandwidth should not be expected to run reliably over the wireless network. This would apply to things like streaming audio/video, running server based applications, large file transfers, and interactive graphic environments (games).

There are two important reasons to register your wireless card. Both have to do with security vulnerabilities and mis-allocation of resources that stem from not registering cards. The first reason that we want you to register your card is to secure the network from non-UCSF Medical Center individuals who might use the wireless connection to our network for a malicious purpose (perhaps to access information or attack a server).

Legally, no. If you allow your neighbor to use the connection then you are in direct violation of your Internet Service Providers terms of service. If your neighbor is knowingly hijacking your wifi network, then he or she is stealing from you. The latter is possible and likely probable if you are running an unsecured wireless network. The act of hijacking a wireless Internet connection is called "wardriving."

To get wireless in the residence halls you must bring your own wireless router and register it with ResNet. Click here for equipment information. Since some students bring their own router; if you see access available in the residence halls, do not connect to it without permission from the owner. For campus use you will need an 802.11b/g wireless network adapter. (Most internal wireless cards will work)
