Related QuestionsWhy can't I bring my down sleeping bag on the trip?
Frequently Asked Questions - First-Year Trip - Outdoor Adven...Sleeping bags work by trapping pockets of still air in their insulation, which your body then heats up to keep you toasty all night. Down sleeping bags use tiny puff of feathers to do this, and synthetic bags use a mass of fine synthetic fibers. When they get wet, the feathers in down sleeping bags clump together and loose their ability to trap air. Synthetic fiber does not suffer from this drawback, and it dries much more quickly than down.

Related QuestionsCan't I just use a sleeping bag?
Hostelling International USAMost HI hostels do not allow sleeping bags. Only in a few cases, like remote and rustic mountain locations. Because sleeping bags have lots of tufts and seams, it's easy for bugs like ticks to get inside the sleeping bag while you are camping and later come out when you unroll the bag in the hostel. Sleeping bags are also much heavier than a simple sleep-sheet and much harder to wash. So unless to plan to go camping you may want to leave the sleeping bag at home.
