How warm a sleeping bag do I need?

Welcome To Pacific Crest Trail Association - FAQ's
Depends on the individual, but most hikers find that a down or synthetic bag rated at +20° F is a good compromise between warmth and weight/bulk. You might choose to add a VBL (vapor barrier liner) at Kennedy Meadows in early season for the high Sierra, or a 5° F bag. Otherwise you will probably be a little chilly at times. Most hikers carry a light sleeping pad, but some insulate themselves from the ground with only clothing and gear.

How do I clean my down jacket or sleeping bag?

Frequently Asked Questions | marmot.com
Wash in Granger’s Down Wash Plus.. Do not use typical liquid laundry detergent on Gore-Tex fabric. It may leave a residue ( such as fabric softeners, fragrance, color brighteners) which could clog the pores of the Gore-Tex. We recommend using warm water for wash and rinse. Do not use all hot or all cold water. It is extremely important to rinse the down very well. We recommend two rinse cycles. For spot cleaning, Granger’s offers G-Wash Spray Cleaner Plus.

How does a sleeping bag keep me warm?

Slumberjack - FAQ
Warmth in a sleeping bag is a direct result of keeping the warmth generated by your body inside the bag, while keeping the cold air outside. Insulation - Since air is a poor conductor of heat, the trapped air within the insulation acts like a thermal barrier between you and the cold air outside the bag by not letting your body heat escape from the bag. The insulation traps air and keeps it from moving around, hence the phrase "dead air".

Why can't I bring my down sleeping bag on the trip?

Frequently Asked Questions - First-Year Trip - Outdoor Adven...
Sleeping bags work by trapping pockets of still air in their insulation, which your body then heats up to keep you toasty all night. Down sleeping bags use tiny puff of feathers to do this, and synthetic bags use a mass of fine synthetic fibers. When they get wet, the feathers in down sleeping bags clump together and loose their ability to trap air. Synthetic fiber does not suffer from this drawback, and it dries much more quickly than down.

Can't I just use a sleeping bag?

Hostelling International USA
Most HI hostels do not allow sleeping bags. Only in a few cases, like remote and rustic mountain locations. Because sleeping bags have lots of tufts and seams, it's easy for bugs like ticks to get inside the sleeping bag while you are camping and later come out when you unroll the bag in the hostel. Sleeping bags are also much heavier than a simple sleep-sheet and much harder to wash. So unless to plan to go camping you may want to leave the sleeping bag at home.
