Road Conditions: Mostly asphalt pavement outside the cities and concrete pavement in the cities. Some tours may have some unpaved (gravel or metalled) sections. Check specific route descriptions for details. Traffic Conditions: Cities are generally busy, most with separated bike paths parallel to and on both sides of the road. Outside the cities, some major roads have higher speed traffic, while mountain roads have slower traffic.

Responsibility for road repair, construction and highway conditions depends on which level of government has jurisdiction. The federal government is responsible for roads crossing federal property, such as national parks. Otherwise, contact your municipal, provincial or territorial transportation office.

A great way to see the area is in your own car. There is an abundance of affordable vehicles around with backpackers selling their cars here before travelling overseas. And if you’re not looking to buy, there’s a wide range of car rentals available. North to Cape Tribulation, the coastal road is sealed bitumen. From Cape Tribulation to Cooktown the coastal road is 4WD only.

Traveling to Big White can be fun. We have some of the most beautiful scenery in the country! Watch for the wildlife when driving and please remember we are located in a mountainous area so good winter tires are a necessity. If you do drive with all seasons tires, please bring chains. Winter road conditions are available by calling the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s road condition report at (800)ROADWIS [(262)762-3947], or on-line at the Department of Transportation website.

Visit the Alberta Motor Association's (AMA) website and click on road reports under quick links, or call the Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation Information Line 427-2731 (during business hours) for the phone number for the AMA road reports in your area. Follow media for current and forecast conditions.

Although the roads between cities and the national parks are generally well-maintained, the roads inside the national parks are rough and dusty, and hence, muddy during the rainy season. During game drives we drive slowly for a more comfortable drive. During the dry season you will get very dusty, so bring some moist cleansing cloths to clean up before meal times. The road from Arusha to Ngorongoro is now tarmac so the driving time to the park is approximately one and a half.

Road Safety: Please note that road accidents are the single greatest hazard facing US travelers abroad. Countries such as Egypt and Kenya have the worst safety records among the countries for which statistics are available. Korea, Morocco, Mexico, Ghana, Spain, India, Nepal, and China also rank high, as do Greece and most non-European countries. Remember that in many countries, such as England, Ireland, Scotland, and Australia, you look in the opposite direction as you would in the States.

VDOT operates a 24-hour-a-day toll-free Highway Helpline at (800) 367-ROAD. You can call this number to learn about road conditions in any area of the state. Using a touchtone phone, follow the directions to select the highway you need information about or press 00 for an operator.

Most camping takes place between Memorial Day and Labor Day, however, numerous sites and campgrounds are open from May to October. Sites tend to be busy on weekends and especially on holiday weekends so plan accordingly. Please contact a Forest Service office near where you plan to visit for additional information on current fire danger, directions, and fees. Mt.
