Some policies will allow you to go right back on claim and will pay you right away (no elimination period) if the disability occurs again. Policies can vary on this anywhere from six months to five years.

Yes.  You can have multiple disability claims during the year.  You must meet the eligibility requirements and have medical documentation for each new claim.

When you have stopped working and your doctor certifies that you are disabled, complete the claim form (DS-1) and mail it to this Division.  Do not file the claim before you stop working or before your physician says you are disabled.  If you file the claim while you are still working, or before the doctor certifies that you are disabled, your claim may be denied.

A determination of "service-connected" disability for PTSD is made by the Compensation and Pension Service -- an arm of VA's Veterans Benefits Administration. The clinicians who provide care for veterans in VA's specialized PTSD clinics and Vet Centers do not make this decision. To file a Total Disability claim, you can call the Credit Union when you have been totally disabled for more than 30 days. The Credit Union will file your initial request for benefits. You will be required to provide proof of disability. Proof of disability must show the date and the cause of the Total Disability and how serious it is, and it must be signed by a physician or a chiropractor.

You may request a reevaluation of your claim anytime that you believe your condition has changed or worsened.  Submit the request to reopen or reevaluate your claim to the VA Regional Office in either letter or statement form or on VA Form 21-4138 (Statement in Support of Claim).
