There are two quick reasons for leading around the barrel throat. The first is an improper forcing cone angle and/or depth. The second is improper cylinder throat to bullet fit. Inspect your forcing cone to be certain it is to specifications and done properly, if it is correct, then check the bullet fit to cylinder throat. Too large a throat will allow hot gases to burn around the bullet as it spans the gap and melt lead onto the barrel face and forcing cone.

The forcing cone is the transition immediately forward of the chamber. Typically a shotgun has a very abrupt diameter change from the chamber into the bore. All SKB shotguns have lengthened forcing cones which provide a much more gentle transition for the shot column. The lengthened forcing cone provides better downrange performance by diminishing pellet deformation, and is responsible for a reduction in felt recoil.

The forcing cone is the ?gateway between the chamber and the bore portion of the barrel. It is a ?funnel?, if you will, where the shot transitions from the chamber dimensions to the bore dimensions. The SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) standard spec is 5 degrees or about ??. This forces the shot to transition abruptly, causing the shot to deform, which results in poor patterns. (You may have seen patterns with odd, uneven shapes and/or holes in the pattern.

Bob Munden: The forcing cone is an extremely important part of the accuracy of the gun. The forcing cone is a funnel opening at the back of the barrel that allows the bullet to enter the barrel. If the forcing cone has tooling grooves from the factory left behind from machining, as the bullet squeezes through that opening, lead will be left behind on those tool markings and will build up on one side of the barrel or the other, even completely around sometimes, affecting your accuracy.
