You can view the full motion video clips that are stored on a CD-i disc using a wide variety of tools, like version 6.0 or later of Microsoft Windows Media Player. This application is available for free download at Microsoft. Media Player allows you to view a wide variety of media formats, including the MPEG audio and video formats used in CD-i among others.

A CD-i disc is based on a different filesystem than the ones used for PC systems. Where in personal computing the ISO-9660 format and its Joliet-variant are the most well known and widely used systems, CD-i discs use the filesystem format that is based on CD-i's operating systems OS-9.

CDs (compact discs) only hold up to 700 megabytes of data. DVDs hold up to 4.7 gigabytes of data, or more than 6 1/2 times as much as a CD. Video can be transferred to a CD but it needs to be so compressed that the quality really suffers. The time required to prepare video to burn to CD is longer than the time needed to transfer video to DVD. The cost of a blank DVD is only a few cents more than the cost of a blank CD.

You can use Folder Guard to restrict access to the CD-ROM or floppy drive, but that would not encrypt the files on the CD or floppy disk. It means that if you take the CD or floppy to another computer, without Folder Guard installed on it, the disc or floppy would NOT be protected. If you want to protect the removable drive so that it would be protected even if you remove it from your computer, you need some sort of encryption software to do that. (Folder Guard does NOT do encryption.)

Large computer stores such as Best Buy or CompUSA sell these monitors practically at cost. And due to thier heavy weight, they are very expensive to ship (and subject to damage). To connect your PC to the Meridian HomeOffice II product, install an Ethernet network interface card (NIC) and load the appropriate drivers on your PC. Use the Ethernet crossover cable (included) to connect the Ethernet card in your PC to the Meridian's Ethernet port. This provides a LAN connection between your PC and the Meridian HomeOffice II product.

Professors may place personal or Library media items on Course Reserve. In-library use videos can be viewed in the Microform Room on the 3rd floor of the Library - ask for help at the Copy Center Desk - or in the Media Center in the basement. CD-ROMs and DVDs may be watched/listened to at the multimedia computers in the Reference area - students may bring their own headphones or check out a pair at the Circulation Desk.

In 95% of the cases all you'll have to do is put the CD into your computer's CD player and the Windows Media Player will automatically detect the video and start it right up. Absolutely. Editing on your PC is a great option for some folks, but not necessary.
