How can I boot a 32 bit kernel when a 64 bit kernel is installed?
Solaris 2 FAQSun hardware released after Solaris 8 no longer supports 32 bit booting; you can only run 64 bit kernels on those. This applies to all Ultra-III systems as well as the Sun Blade 100 and other UltraSPARC-IIe systems. SPARC: In order to boot a 32 bit kernel on other 64-bit capable systems, type "boot kernel/unix" at the "ok" prompt. x86: In order to boot a 32 bit kernel on other 64-bit capable systems, type "b kernel/unix" at the "(b)oot or ..." prompt.
Related QuestionsSolaris 2 FAQSetting the "boot-file" in the EEPROM to "kernel/unix" makes it the default kernel. Alternatively, you can move away the sparcv9/unix file in which case the boot loader will fall back to the 32 bit kernel. Patch installation may restore that file, though. Beware: when specifying "boot -s", or any boot command with flag arguments, the standard default kernel/sparcv9/unix kernel will be booted; you need to specify "boot kernel/unix -s".Related Questions

LAM FAQ: Heterogenenity and LAM/MPIMost 64 bit operating systems have the capacity to generate 32 bit executables. By doing so, one can make the cluster "homogenous" (at least in terms of bit size). Once all the executables (including relevant libraries) are 32 bits, one can run MPI jobs as if it were a homogenous cluster. Note that LAM/MPI libraries and executables should also be built as 32 bit libraries/executables.

SoildWorks, Mastercam, Dimension 3D Printing, CAD, PDM, COSM...Memory… The clear advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit is that 64 bit allows virtually unlimited memory usage. Where as 32 bit has a 4 GIG upper limit… I would recommend only those customers who are creating HUGE assemblies and are specifically running out of memory in XP. It is not that difficult to use up more than 2-4 GIG in a large assembly. But only a small number of our user base fits into this category. Most of our customer do not come anywhere near the limits of 4 GIG memory.
