There have been isolated case reports of arterial and skin calcification in mammograms of patients with PXE, and unpublished anecdotes of many women with PXE undergoing breast biopsy for evaluation of microcalcifications. A 2003 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology2 systematically evaluated mammography and breast pathology in PXE. Breast microcalcification and arterial calcification are not rare in the normal population and are often not of diagnostic value.

It's pretty common for women to be uncomfortable during mammography. It is a transient discomfort. When a mammogram is performed, the breast is gently pressed between two smooth flat plastic paddles. Conventional mammography requires x-ray film and phosphorescent intensifying screens (light) to make a diagnosis. Digital mammography is an electronic transfer of data. Albany Med utilizes the most recent Digital Mammography - Second Generation. This does not require light, but a direct transfer of information, which makes the images clearer. In particular, the area around the skin tissue within the breast, allowing the radiologist to visualize very dense breasts tissue.

The most exciting new development in future years will be digital mammography. This requires the same breast compression as x-rays but produces a more accurate electronic image. Researchers are also looking into various techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which should make it possible to painlessly screen the breast tissue for abnormalities while a woman lies face down on a bed that has an opening for her breast.

They are only part of a complete breast exam. Your doctor also should do a clinical breast exam. If your mammogram finds something abnormal, your doctor will order other tests. quot;False negatives" can happen. This means everything may look normal, but cancer is actually present. False negatives don't happen often. Younger women are more likely to have a false negative mammogram than are older women. This is because the breast tissue is denser, making cancer harder to spot.
