DSL technology takes advantage of your existing phone line. While regular phone calls are transferred at relatively low frequencies, DSL data is transmitted at much higher frequencies. Both types of transmissions can occur simultaneously, without interference. Voice and digital data are separated by a splitter placed in your home or office. The splitter sends voice transmissions to the telephone, and digital data transmissions to a DSL modem. Fax machines will operate as usual.

Yes, your DSL service will not interfere with your current phone system. However, EarthLink Small Office DSL will not work on a digital phone line, a roll over line or a line that is part of a hunt group. We suggest that you install your Small Office DSL on an analog fax line. This line must be provided by your local phone company (Bell South, SBC, Verizon, etc.), not a third party voice provider (AT&T, MCI/Worldcom, etc.).

The Small Office DSL Router uses Network Address Translation (NAT) for routing purposes. This acts as a firewall in that it provides basic protection from some of the most common incoming attacks. NAT makes the machines on the local network behind the router more secure because the client computers on the local network use IP addresses that are reserved for use on internal networks only.
