Since there is a huge overlap in the two venues (stand-ups usually write their own material) comedy writing is often discussed in the newsgroup. You're either new to the group or not a comic. The biggest difference between an imrpov show and stand-up comedy is that in improv you get an entire team/cast of improvisors working to make you laugh as opposed to one lone comic. The up side is that improv, in my opinion, has a much broader appeal because of the multiple actor's senses of humor ganging up on you.

Also, they are uncut and include "fire side" chats with the creators. So, far reports are saying the tapes sold well and that more tapes are going to made in the future.

It is simple to explain. Hack material is unorginal, overdone or simply stolen jokes. Most comics write their own material and you can get further in comedy if you do your own original jokes. If people don't understand that, they just aren't that bright. If you have trouble explaining it, consider it a good standup exercise to try to get your point across in as few words as possible.

Any TOPIC is fair game for comedy. However, different circumstances determine the topics that are appropriate. For instance, people who are sensitive should see comedy that's billed as a clean/non-offensive show- and the comics who agree to do that show should abide by those parameters. Many corporate events/ private parties fit into that category and therefore the comic's comments should reflect that.

Alternative comedy is just another kind of outlet. The reason it exists and the reason it survives is because some of it is incredible. People must like alternative comedy to keep coming back every week or every other week. A lot of the performers write new stuff for every show, and there is a great deal of unpredictability. Alternative comedy should be a risk and is based on surprise.

A comedy class can help you get over your initial fears because it gives you a place to get feedback BEFORE you hit the bright lights. It can help you avoid some of the more obvious rookie mistakes, like talking about how bright the lights are. It can also help you get some contacts. So it's a great way to START doing standup comedy. But experience on stage is the only way to truly grow as a comedian.
