The Sexual Offences Act 2003 (the Act) came into force on the 1 May 2004. It repealed almost all of the existing statute law in relation to sexual offences. The purpose of the Act is to strengthen and modernise the law on sexual offences, whilst improving preventative measures and the protection of individuals from sexual offenders.

Our legal system provides certain rights and protections for owners of property. The kind of property that results from the use of the mind in developing new ideas and products is called intellectual property. Intellectual property law is the area of the law that includes patent law, copyright law, trademark law and trade secret law. In addition, some aspects of other branches of the law, such as licensing and unfair competition are included within the area of intellectual property.

Rape is a violent act in which the 'aggressor makes a decision to force his victim to submit to what he wants. This can mean holding her down with his body weight or using a weapon, and may include penetration of her vagina, mouth or rectum. Rape is not a sexual act, even though it involves sex. It is a form of violence that is meant to humiliate and make the victim feel powerless. Acquaintance Rape: perpetrated by someone the victim knows, not including a relative (that's called incest).

In criminal cases, rape-shield laws generally provide that evidence of the victim's sexual conduct may not be admitted as evidence of that person's character. However, rape-shield laws typically do not apply to civil actions.
