ALDs are Assistive Listening Devices. They consist of a microphone/transmitter positioned close to the speaker's mouth that sends the speaker's voice through the air or by cable to the receiver worn by the student. ALDs can provide clear sound over distances, eliminating echoes and reducing the distraction of surrounding noises, allowing the student to more easily attend to the instructor. One of the major goals of signal processing schemes is to enhance the signal to noise ratio perceived by the listener. The use of aids with automatic low frequency reduction represents an attempt at this goal. Unfortunately, despite all the new technological advances, a basic problem remains for which wearable amplification falls woefully short. That problem relates to the physical distance between the microphone of the hearing aid and the source of the sound desired to be heard.

These devices assist in hearing sounds that can alert someone, like the telephone or the doorbell, or sounds that just need a little more volume for one person but not the entire room, like the television or a performance (see next question). Assistive listening devices come in all shapes and sizes and are usually attached to everyday communication devices to send the audio signal from the source to the hard of hearing listener through a special receiver similar to a walkman. To listen, regular headphones or ear buds can be used if the listener does not have hearing aids, but if they wear hearing aids, these must have a special T-Switch to pick up the electronic signal from the audio source.

Assistive listening devices are typically used by people who have some residual hearing or who are hard of hearing. People who have difficulty hearing speech or who need to hear certain sound information in noisy situations may benefit from using an ALD. Additionally, people who need to hear sound at a louder level than other people in the same area may use ALDs.

Assistive Listening Devices are tools that help individuals who have a hearing loss maintain their communication independence. Typically, a hearing aid makes all sounds louder, whereas an Assistive Listening Device can increase the loudness of a desired sound. For example, these devices can work together with hearing instruments to amplify a radio, television set or alarm system; or they can turn an auditory alarm (such as a smoke signal) into a visual alarm (such as a strobe light).

Go to the System Preferences and activate the Universal Access preference pane — the one with the little person in front of a blue background. Once you're there, check the checkbox at the very bottom of that pane. While some insurance companies pay for hearing aids, or part of the cost of hearing aids, many do not. Please check with your insurance company or in your policy manual to see if hearing aids are covered.

Infrared systems use infrared light to transmit the audio signal. When this light is blocked, the signal stops. Thus, infrared systems are susceptible to people and objects getting in the way. And, infrared systems do not work in sunlight. Another problem with infrared systems is the cost, complexity and unsightliness of installing emitter panels.

Each courtroom is equipped with a Assisted Listening Devices-(ALD). The wireless receivers will allow a person to sit anywhere in the courtroom and hear the proceedings. They may be used by persons who do or do not have hearing aids. Should you wish to use this assisted listening device, please advise the court attendant or bailiff.

FM (Radio Systems), Infrared, and Audio Induction Loop are the three basic alternatives for assistive listening. FM systems, such as Listen's systems, transmit sounds as radio waves within a specially FCC-designated range. The user must access the transmission through a receiver. In general, FM systems are less expensive than their alternatives. They also are the easiest and more flexible to install. Their radio waves will pass through walls and in Listen's case, reach up to 3,000 feet.

HATIS®is a Hearing Aid Telephone Interconnect System. HATIS® is not a hearing aid. It is a device designed for hearing-impaired individuals to use directly with a doctor-prescribed hearing aid equipped with a telecoil (T-coil). HATIS® products plug directly into the audio jack in virtually all communication and audio devices, such as cellular, cordless, and landline telephones, CD and MP3 players, computers, PDAs, stereos, television and much more.

Assistive listening devices (ALDs) or assistive listening systems (ALSs) are instruments that are designed to improve a person's ability to hear in specific listening situations. Some ALDs amplify a sound signal, but the primary purpose of an ALD is to make the targeted sound (e.g., a teacher's voice, a movie, etc.) easier to hear by isolating the sound source from surrounding noise.

Headsets for hearing-impaired patrons are available for every performance and can be checked out at the Concierge Desk. For each of our shows we have a recommended minimum age for those attending. Actually, nothing! While everyday experience and Hollywood movies make people think of sounds when they see the words "radio telescope," radio astronomers do not actually listen to noises. First, sound and radio waves are different phenomena. Sound consists of pressure variations in matter, such as air or water. Sound will not travel through a vacuum. Radio waves, like visible light, infrared, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays, are electromagnetic waves that do travel through a vacuum.

The most common assistive devices for treating arthritis pain are splints and braces, which are used to support weakened joints or allow them to rest. Some of these devices prevent the joint from moving; others allow some movement. A splint or brace should be used only when recommended by a doctor or therapist, who will show the patient the correct way to put the device on, ensure that it fits properly, and explain when and for how long it should be worn.
