Hang the feeder away from trees, bushes or fences where squirrels may climb or jump to the feeder. If you must hang the feeder on a tree, keep it at least six feet from the trunk or the tree limbs. Add a squirrel baffle over the feeder to prevent squirrels from climbing down the wire from which you hang the feeder. If you decide to use a free standing pole, it should be 5' high and 10' from the nearest tree.

Birds need bed and board all year round, so the genuine answer is now. Especially for year-round residents like titmice, nuthatches, chickadees who will explore the houses in winter, and may even choose to roost in them before nesting. The sooner the birds get used to a house or feeder, the sooner it will become part of their daily routine.

The best place to hang a framed original is an interior wall that is not near food preparation, water sources (pipes and bathrooms), vents, windows, or in the path of sunlight. The environment you choose to hang your valued originals is important for their preservation. Interior walls are better than exterior walls that can have frequent temperature and humidity changes. Air vents, heat vents, and fireplaces can also have sudden, high temperature changes and can deposit soot and dirt.

Sometimes it takes birds quite a while before they use a new feeder or bird bath. If after ten days, no birds are visiting, think about moving the unit to another location in your yard. Store Idaho Potatoes in a cool, dark and well ventilated place. They will keep about a week at room temperature and for several weeks at 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
